Beavers, Potters make run for state
GALLIPOLIS — Six Beaver Local wrestlers reached the semifinals of the Div. II district wrestling tournament on Friday at Gallia Academy.
Jordan Bates (106 pounds), John Burkett (113), Jeryck Boyd (120), Bobby Buchheit (150), Jake Hughes (157) and Evan Ours (165) are all onto Saturday’s semifinals.
For East Liverpool, Kyle Ingram (106), Wyatt McCune (132) and Xavier Lara (190) are onto the semifinals.
Bates will face Ingram for a chance to go the 106 final. Burkett is slated to meet Sheridan’s Cash Owen, while Boyd has West Holmes’ Peyton Marin. McCune will take on Chillicothe’s Cannan Smith, while Buchheit has New Lexington’s Harrison Ratliff. Hughes is slated to take on Gallia Academy’s Wyatt Warren, while Ours has Claymont’s Kamden Stout. Lara, who came into the tournament as a fifth-place finisher at sectionals, will take on Miami Trace’s Tyler Stevens.
Action continues today with the top four placers in each weight class qualifying for the state tournament set for March 13-15 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
Div. III Independence
INDEPENDENCE –It was tough going for area Div. III wrestlers on Friday at the district tournament at Independence High School.
Just one area wrestler made it to the semifinals.
Southern’s Rowan Wiley (45-7) punched his ticket to the 157-pound semifinals with an 8-2 win over Berkshire’s Estevon Huesca in the quarterfinal. Wiley will wrestle Beachwood senior Caleb Greenwood (44-3) in the semifinal.

Div. II Kenston
KENSTON — Two West Branch wrestlers punched their ticket into the semifinals on Friday at the Div. II district tournament at Kenston High School.
At 215 pounds, Gavin Hang defeated Canfield’s John Nagy, 8-7, in a quarterfinal. Hang (45-1) will meet Jefferson Area’s Matt Anderson (42-7) in the semifinal.
At 150 pounds, Beau Nezbeth pined Firestone’s D’Mari Campbell in 4:43 in a quarterfinal. Nezbeth (46-0) will meet Perry’s Chance Schlauch (33-5) in the semifinal.
