Hill returns to Beaver Local lineup

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s 6-foot-7 Owen Hill was raring to go after missing the last five games due to injury.

Hill scored a career-high 31 points in his usual dominating fashion as the Beavers rolled over Salem, 77-56, Tuesday.

The Beavers improve to 14-4 on the season — including a 11-2 mark with Hill in the lineup.

Beaver Local was 3-2 with Hill sidelined with a small fracture in foot, but the West Liberty University recruit helps the Beavers play at a different level.

Hill scored 24 points in the second and third quarters when the Beavers outscored the Quakers 47-25.

Deontay Steele topped Salem with 16 points. Ty Manion had 11 pointsa nd five rebounds.

Steele and Manion hit three-pointers to give the Quakers an early 6-1 lead, but Salem shot 3-of-14 from the field.

After the score was 8-8, it didn’t take long for Beaver Local to take control. Hill scored 10 points in a span of 2:18 — including a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play — to boost the Beavers’ lead to 28-14. Peyton Cowdery followed with another three-point play for a 31-16 lead with 3:16 left in the second quarter.

The Beavers led 37-25 at halftime and 57-33 through three quarters.

Salem (4-12) scored 23 of its 56 points in the fourth quarter.

Salem won the junior varsity game, 61-43.

The Quakers had a team effort with Damion Mathes scoring 14 points, Cam Martin 13, Colton Hall 11 and Tarion Thornton 10. The Beavers were led by Owen Moore with 18 points and Jett Johnson 11.

Beaver Local will play at Oak Glen on Thursday, while Salem travels to rival West Branch on Friday.

Columbiana 68, Wellsville 63

WELLSVILLE –Senator Johnson had 16 of his 24 points in the first half as Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference-leading Columbiana surged to a 68-63 win over Wellsville on Tuesday.

The Clippers are 15-3 overall and lead the EOAC by one game with a 11-1 record. Columbiana hosts Valley Christian on Friday and can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win.

Cooper Brown aided the winning effort with 17 points, four assists, four rebounds and four blocks. Hunter Davanzo had nine points and 12 rebounds. Senator Johnson added 14 rebounds.

The Clippers were also ranked third in the OVAC Class 3A standings coming into the night and should maintain a top-four standing heading into Thursday’s cutoff date for the tournament.

For Wellsville (8-11 and 8-5 in the EOAC), Darnell Roe had a season-high 30 points along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. It is the second straight game Roe tallied a career high in points. Austin Adkins added 16 points, while Andrew Mackey had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Wellsville was ranked fifth in the OVAC Class 1A standings and may need help to make the top four when pairings are decided on Thursday.

The Tigers host United on Friday.

LISBON — Lisbon kept its chances at an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title alive with a 66-37 win over Valley Christian on Tuesday.

The Devils are 12-4 overall and 10-2 in the EOAC. Lisbon trails league-leading Columbiana by a game with two left to play in the league standings.

Aidan Ramgeet led the winners with 21 points and three steals. AJ Ramgeet added 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Blaine Barnes chipped in 10 points and 14 rebounds. Ashton Hinchliffe had nine rebounds as well.

Lisbon is also sitting fourth in the OVAC Class 2A standings with Thursday’s cutoff date looming.

Lisbon will be at Leetonia on Friday night.

Lisbon won the jayvee game, 38-29. Nick Peruchetti had nine points for the Devils.

HANOVERTON –Jason Pratt had 14 points and Matthew Hoopes added 11 more as United ran away with a 57-31 win over Southern on Tuesday.

United is 10-7 and 7-5 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. Southern falls to 2-16 and 0-12 in the EOAC.

Jack Pitts had nine points for the Indians.

United heads to Wellsville on Friday.

The Indians will host East Palestine on Friday.

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — Gavin Geisse kept Oak Glen’s OVAC tournament hopes alive with a 17-point performance in a Golden Bear 58-50 win over Steubenville Central Catholic on Tuesday.

The Bears are 10-5 and sit fifth in the OVAC Class 4A standings. The Golden Bears will have one more shot to close the gap as it hosts Beaver Local on Thursday’s cutoff date.

Elijah Knisley and Noah Willey had 11 points each for the Golden Bears.
