Beavers work overtime vs. Red Devils

CALCUTTA — In a matchup of two 6-foot-7 All-Ohioans, Beaver Local and Owen Hill came out on top of St. Clairsville and Griffin Straub, 63-58, in overtime in an OVAC Class 4A semifinal Tuesday.
Hill scored 10 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to power the Beavers. Luke Rettos contributed 12 points and handled the point guard duties. Aiden Dray addeded nine points.
Second-seeded Beaver Local improves to 16-4 and advances to the OVAC final against top-seeded Cambridge (19-2) at 6 p.m. Saturday at the ECO Center in St. Clairsville. Cambridge defeated Beaver Local, 71-40, on Jan. 24, but that when Hill was out with a foot injury.
St. Clairsville, which defeated Beaver Local 60-52 on Dec. 27, drops to 13-6 overall.
Straub topped Red Devils with a game-high 29 points, but the Beavers shut him out in overtime.
The Beavers jumped out to a 19-8 lead as Hill scored seven points and Dray five. The Red Devils opened the game shooting 3-of-20 from the field, but got untracked when Straub hit 11 straight points as St. Clairsville closed within 25-21 at halftime.
Beaver Local led 40-31 entering the fourth quarter and 50-43 on a Hill layup with 1:53 to play in regulation.
A Straub three-pointer tied the game at 52-52 with 43 seconds to play and Hill missed a three-pointer with 1.4 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
A Matthew Anderson basket and a Luke Rettos three-pointer put the Beavers up 57-52 with 2:34 to play. Hill had a layup and a block, while Rettos and Nicolas McKenzie each hit a free throw.
St. Clairsville closed within 61-58 with 16 seconds left. Hill hit a pair of free throws to close out the scoring.
St. Clairsville won the junior varsity game, 60-27. Nathan Pusateri scored eight points for Beaver Local.

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville’s boys basketball team gave Indian Creek a run for its money in a 58-54 loss on Tuesday in OVAC consolation play.
Darnell Roe led the Tiger attack with 18 points, while Austin Adkins had 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Jeron Jackson had 14 points.
Nishon White had 19 points for Creek (5-14).
Wellsville fell to 9-12 and will host River on Friday.
Wellsville won the jayvee game, 45-31.

HANOVERTON — Oak Glen’s Mason Kell had 11 points in a balanced attack as the Golden Bears downed United 48-36 on Tuesday.
Noah Willey and Tyler Evans added eight points each for the Golden Bears (11-8).
For United (10-9), Kota Shasteen scored 17. Only four Golden Eagles scored in the contest.
United won the jayvee game, 37-31. Ayden Bradley and Levi Lucas had 10 points each for the Eagles.
Oak Glen hosts Clay-Battelle on Friday.
United goes to East Liverpool on Friday.

SALINEVILLE — Southern Local defeated Weirton Madonna 65-56 in a homecoming game on Tuesday.
Landen Heffner had 20 points, six assists and nine rebounds for the Indians Jacob McCurdy added 14 ooints, while Mason Pitts had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jack Pitts added 12 points.
Southern is 3-17 overall. Madonna is 2-17.

Leetonia is 2-19 overall and 2-12 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.
Wellsville is 0-21 and 0-14.
Wellsville hosts Shadyside today.
Leetonia opens tournament play at Western Reserve on Feb. 20.
