ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- Faced with another championship game against Buckeye 8 Athletic League member Cambridge, Beaver Local could not turn the tables on Saturday as the Bobcats grabbed the OVAC Class 4A championship with a 67-56 win over the Beavers at the ECO Center.
The Bobcats (20-2) were led by Garrett Carpenter's 26 points and six rebounds.
Cambridge had beaten Beaver Local 71-40 in the Buckeye 8 championship game on the same floor on Jan. 24.
The Bobcats used 10 threes in the first half to build a 36-26 advantage at the break, but even though Beaver Local managed to get closer in the second half, Cambridge had too many offensive weapons to overcome.
Cam Lauer added 18 points for the Bobcats, while Mason Gregg had 17 points.
Beaver Local fell to 16-5 and will host South Range on Tuesday.
On Sunday, the Beavers earned the No. 4 seed in the Division IV East District draw and will host No. 8 seed Minerva on Feb. 27 in a sectional contest. If the Beavers should win they would get No. 5 seed Carrollton in the district semifinal. Defending Div. IV state champion Maysville is on the other side of the bracket and could be the Beavers' district final opponent if the Beavers can win twice.
In other OVAC championship games, Toronto won the Class 2A title with a 54-48 win over Caldwell, while Steubenville took out Wheeling Park 68-58 in the Class 5A championship. Wheeling Central knocked off Monroe Central 83-55 for the Class 3A title.
