County record

COLUMBIANA –Crestview senior Addison Rhodes had her eyes on the Columbiana County scoring record ever since Southern Local’s Ashley Shroades set it in 2024.

Most thought that if NCAA Div. I University of Fairfield basketball recruit stayed healthy that record wouldn’t be around long and she did indeed pass it on Thursday in the Rebels 74-19 senior night win over Liberty.

Rhodes came into the game needing 35 points to pass Shroades total of 2,268. She scored 39 points and the new county mark is 2,273 and counting.

Rhodes passed Shroades on a three-pointer from the wing with 7:50 left in the fourth quarter with the Rebels up 68-16.

“I didn’t know how far away I was (coming into the game),” Rhodes said. “I try not to think about that stuff. I just try to play the game the right way. Once I hit the shot though, I knew what was going on. It was a great feeling to have.”

Rhodes was 9 for 17 in the first half and then got things really clicking as she was 6 of 7 in the nine minutes of running clock time she played in the second half.

The only time Rhodes and Shroades careers intersected was during postseason all-star games. Crestview and Southern did not meet during the time Rhodes and Shroades’ careers overlapped.

Beaver Local JVs

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Beaver Local girls junior varsity basketball team doubled up East Liverpoool, 49-24, Thursday.

Mercedes McCullough led the Beavers with a game-high 16 points. Gianna Congrove added 10 points and Maci Bourne eight.

The Beavers are 12-4 on the season.

Leading the Potters were Arie Weyand and Abriana Copeland with seven points apiece.

The only time Rhodes and Shroades careers intersected was during postseason all-star games. Crestview and Southern did not meet during the time Rhodes and Shroades’ careers overlapped.

“(Ashley) is a great person and a great player,” Rhodes said. “It’s a good record to beat.”

Crestview coach Aaron Blatch, a Southern Local graduate, said he coached Shroades during summers when he was at Southern.

“Those two got to know one another a bit and I think Ashley would agree that Addison is a very worthy successor to that record,” Blatch said. “The stuff Addison does behind the scenes is incredible. If we’re practicing for two hours she’s doing two more hours on her own at least every day.”

Earlier in the season, Rhodes topped the Crestview career school record after passing Chelsea Bowker. Bowker held the Columbiana County mark of 2,012 points from 2009 to 2024. Bowker went on to have a successful college career at Div. I St. Bonaventure.

“She has talked to me in the past,” Rhodes said. “I definitely have heard how good she was.”

The Rebels have four regular season games left and probably a few postseason games too, so Rhodes’ final total will soon become the new target.

And everyone has a good idea of who might be in line to take it.

“(Southern Local’s Katie Kellogg) is going to be great,” Rhodes said. “She’s a freshman now and she’s good at scoring the ball.”

Rhodes said she would have liked to have played Southern this year just to see how the two stacked up. The Indians won a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference on Thursday and are having one of the best seasons in school history.

“Great players like to play great players,” Rhodes said. “I’m very competitive.”

The victory gives Rhodes and the Rebels four straight Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Division titles. Rhodes said the priority is to close out with the outright title against second-place LaBrae on Feb. 9 on the road, but the Rebels (17-1 overall and 13-0 in the league) have bigger goals in mind.

“It’s not easy to do especially in our league,” Rhodes said. “My freshman year the league was insanely good, so we had to come to practice and work hard and play well as a team.”

Crestview has lost in a district final the last three years and Rhodes does not want that to happen again.

“That’s the number one thing on my mind,” Rhodes said. “We’ve lost three years in a row and I do not want to lose again.”

Crestview won the jayvee game 27-11. Lainey Milhoan had 10 points for the Rebels.

The Rebels will host Salem on Wednesday.

Game notes

¯ Shroades, a sophomore on the Wheeling University basketball team, was in Columbiana County on Thursday to watch her sister Allyssa’s senior night game at Southern.

¯ Fairfield University’s women’s basketball team was playing Quinnipiac on ESPNU on Thursday and Rhodes was trying to race home to catch some of the game. She has yet to watch a Fairfield game in person.

“They’re pretty good,” Rhodes said. “They play the ball fast and shoot the ball great. They play inside out and the defense is great. I love the way they play.”

¯ Crestview is currently ranked No. 1 in Div. V in Northeast Ohio by the OHSAA RPI formula. Blatch said it will come down to the wire between Crestview and Norwayne for the top seed. The tournament draw is on Super Bowl Sunday.

¯ Blatch said LaBrae, Doylestown Chippewa and La Grange Keystone will also receive high seeds.

¯ Rhodes’ favorite WNBA player in Caitlin Clark.

“I love the way she shoots it,” Rhodes said.

¯ Blatch said the team only got one practice in during the week due to the snow storm, but he said Rhodes did her own thing at Reign3D Training Academy in Chippewa, Pennsylvania during the down time.

¯ Liberty is 2-14 and 1-12 in the MVAC Gray.
