Ohio edges W.Va. in boys OVAC showcase
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — There were plenty of standout players on the artificial pitch Sunday afternoon at windy and chill-filled Red Devil Stadium for the annual Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Senior Showcase boys soccer all-star match.
Union Local’s Brady Roe turned out to be the hero for the Buckeye State. His goal in the fifth – and final – round of the shootout gave Ohio a cherished and hard-fought, 2-1, victory over West Virginia.
The match was deadlocked at 1 after 80 minutes before the Buckeyes found the net on 4-of-5 penalty kicks to 3-of-5 for the Mountaineers. With each side having three goals in the shootout, Roe stepped up as the last shooter and pounded the ball into the right side of the net as his teammates mobbed him.
Also scoring for Ohio in the shootout against Wood County Christian’s Andrew Seigneur were St. Clairsville’s Parker Galloway; Steubenville’s Cole Bowers and Cambridge’s Rylan Matthews. Finding the net against St. Clairsville’s Talan Rice for West Virginia were Linsly’s Agustin Fonseca, Wheeling Park’s Ike Aderholt and Wheeling Central’s Ray Konkoleski.
Descalzo was voted Ohio’s Offensive Player of the Match, while Rice earned the Defensive Player of the Match. Fonseca was the W.Va. Offensive Player of the Match and Wheeling Park’s Sam Rockey the Defensive Player of the Match.
Hartung scores in West Virginia win
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — West Virginia trailed Ohio 1-0 after 40 minutes of action Sunday during the annual Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Senior Showcase girls soccer all-star match.
However, the Mountaineers tied things on a goal by Wheeling Park’s Hailey Hastings in the 69th minute and then outscored the Buckeyes 3-1 in the shootout for a 2-1 victory on the artificial pitch inside windy and chill-filled Red Devil Stadium.
Steubenville’s Bailee Beall gave Ohio a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when her shot from the top of the box to the left of Oak Glen goalkeeper Cameron Michaud tickled the twine.
The match remained that way as West Virginia continually possessed the ball in the Ohio end of the field, but couldn’t get a quality scoring opportunity against the tough defense.
Finally, Hastings broke free down the middle of the field near the top of the box. She dribbled in with a defender hounding her, but her right-footed shot rolled along the turf and into the left corner of the net against Steubenville’s Sadie Edwards.
Neither team would dent the scoreboard in the final 11 minutes as the shootout was prompted.
Both teams scored in the opening round as Weir’s Madelyn Cramer and Beall each found the net. Wheeling Central’s Gianna Konkle picked the top right corner of the net to put the Mountaineers ahead 2-1. That would be enough as Parkersburg South goalkeeper Emilee Owens watched two shots go over top of the cage and a third hit the post.
Oak Glen’s Macy Hartung sealed the win with a goal on the final shot.
Owens was voted West Virginia’s Defensive Player of the Match, while Hastings was the Offensive Player of the Match. Beall was Ohio’s Offensive Player of the Match, with Columbiana’s Madison Janis the Defensive Player of the Match.

Cavs fined for sitting players
NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA fined the Cleveland Cavaliers $100,000 on Tuesday for violating the league’s player participation policy by resting both Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley against the Miami Heat on Nov. 12.
The league noted the policy adopted before the 2023-24 season was designed to promote participation in the NBA’s regular season.
Cleveland beat Miami 130-116 without Mitchell, a six-time All-Star, and Mobley, a first-time All-Star last season. The Cavaliers also were without All-Star Darius Garland, who aggravated his surgically repaired left toe in a game on Nov. 10.
Sanders’ home burglarized
CLEVELAND (AP) — Shedeur Sanders’ uneven performance in his NFL debut wasn’t the only bad thing to happen to him on Sunday.
The Browns rookie quarterback discovered Sunday night that his home in Granger Township, a Cleveland suburb, had been burglarized during the game, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
No suspects have been identified, the person said.
A statement released by the Medina County Sheriff’s Office to several media outlets said approximately $200,000 in property was stolen from the home.
The release said three people entered the home at 6:46 p.m. ET. Surveillance cameras in the home captured video of the suspects entering different parts of the home. The suspects were wearing masks and gloves and were seen leaving the home just before 7 p.m.
Multiple calls and emails to the Medina County Sheriff’s Department seeking details were not returned to The Associated Press.
Sanders joins a growing list of NFL players whose homes have been burglarized during games. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan have dealt with break-ins since the start of last season.
The highly publicized rookie came into Cleveland’s game against the Baltimore Ravens with 12:43 remaining in the third quarter after Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion.
Sanders completed his first two passes, but not much went right after that. He went 4 for 16 for 47 yards with an interception and was sacked twice, finishing with a 13.5 passer rating as the Ravens rallied for a 23-16 victory.
Sanders, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, is expected to speak to reporters on Wednesday as the Browns begin preparing for Sunday’s game at Las Vegas. Sanders would get his first NFL start if Gabriel does not clear the concussion protocol.
