Golden Bears are top seed

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s volleyball team earned the top seed and will open up the Class AA state tournament against No. 8 seed Independence at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Charleston Coliseum and Civic Center.

If the Golden Bears win that match they will play, the winner of No. 4 seed James Monroe and No. 5 Poca at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the state semifinal.

The Class AA state championship match is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed and defending state champ Philip Barbour will play No. 7 South Harrison at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while No. 3 seed Charleston Catholic will meet No. 6 seed Wheeling Central at 3 p.m.

The winners of that match will play at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the state semifinal.

Oak Glen (25-10-3) has beaten Philip Barbour, Charleston Catholic and Wheeling Central in the regular season.

An all-session pass is $35 for adults and $25 for students. Session tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students.

Meadowbrook falls at state

DAYTON — Eastern Buckeye Conference volleyball champion Marlington bowed out of the Div. IV state semifinal with a 25-20, 14-25, 25-18, 25-16 loss to Buckeye Valley on Thursday at Wright State University.

Danica Sarchione led the Dukes with 22 kills and 18 digs. Marlington (25-3) was making its third straight trip to the state tournament.

Archbishop McNicholas defeated Meadowbrook 25-15, 25-22, 25-14 in the other Div. IV state semifinal.

Meadowbrook (25-3) had beaten East Liverpool in the district final.

Archbishop McNicholas (26-2) and Buckeye Valley (25-3) will play in the state final at noon on Saturday.

Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown arrested

Former NFL star Antonio Brown has been arrested on an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting after a celebrity boxing event in Miami, police confirmed Thursday.

Brown, 37, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, said Miami police spokesman Mike Vega. He was flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is being held pending extradition to Miami, Vega said.

It was unclear why Brown was taken to New Jersey first or how long he had been in Dubai, although he has posted several times on social media over the past few months from there. According to an arrest warrant detailing the May 16 shooting, Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer after the boxing match and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with earlier.
