NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — A trio of local caregivers from Mountaineer Casino Resort & Races will be honored at tonight’s horse races.

Chino Gudino, his son Luis Gudino and Doug Adams will receive the Race Track Chaplaincy of America’s 2025 White Horse Award for their unwavering dedication for a dear friend whose wish was to remain close to his horses during his final days battling cancer.

The RTCA said they ensured their friend, Dennis VanMeter, a Vietnam veteran and horseman, felt loved and respected by transforming his tack room into a peaceful sanctuary and provided constant companionship.

Their tireless efforts tending to his barn and horses, and in fulfilling his wishes, highlight the profound spirit within the racing community. Their selfless devotion not only eased a challenging time for Dennis and his family, but also brought peace and dignity.

The RTCA said the actions of the Gudinos and Adams “exemplify the best core values of the racing community — love, respect and steadfast support for each other during life’s most difficult moments. Honoring them with the RTCA White Horse Award rightfully celebrates their extraordinary compassion and the enduring legacy of Dennis VanMeter, who bravely passed away in September 2024.”

A special tribute video showcasing their inspiring story premiered on Oct. 28 at the DelMar Thoroughbred Club, coinciding with Breeders’ Cup World Championship week.

The Gudinos and Adams will be honored in person at Mountaineer today in a presentation ceremony with co-workers, families and friends. It will take place in the winner’s circle between the second and third races at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Established in 2003, the White Horse Award honors individuals in racing whose bravery and selflessness uplift those around them.

Starting at $2.99/week.
