Southern inducts five into HOF

SALINEVILLE — The 22nd class to be inducted into the Salineville/Southern Local Athletic Hall of Fame was honored recently. They are recognized for their contributions to Salineville High and Southern Local high athletic programs. Nominees are then selected by the Hall of Fame committee.
Diane Pitts Meister
Class of 1976
She was both an athlete and a contributor. As an athlete, Diane was on what she called “a winning basketball team.” The team went 43-0 until a loss to United. She was a tireless competitor and received the junior award and the MVP award her senior year. Diane’s contributions to Southern Local began immediately after graduating. She has always attended sporting events and has worked in the concession stands for every type of sport. All that increased as she supported her daughter during the years she was active in sports. She continues this support with three grandchildren who are very involved in Southern. She currently works at Southern Local.
Robert J. “Rob”
Wilson III
Class of 1983
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a seven-time varsity letter winner in two sports. Rob lettered in football three years. He was an outstanding linebacker and for his efforts received the following awards: first-team Tri-County League, second-team All-Columbina County and The Review All-Area third team. Rob’s second sport was track & field. He lettered four years and was the 1983 Indian League undefeated shot put champion and earned the boys track high point award. For the past 26 years, Rob has worked with Schumacher Homes with much success as Schumacher Homes Company of the Year while he was Ashland general manager.
Nikki Meister Kellogg
Class of 2003
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a contributor. As the person who nominated her said: “If you look up the definition of ‘contributor,’ Nikki meets all the requirements of that definition. Her hard work and dedication have profoundly shaped the success and legacy of many Southern Local sports programs. “She volunteers her time to make sure Southern athletes have what they need. For example, she enjoys working the concession stands for volleyball and girls basketball games. She is currently serving as the high school cheerleading coach. Nikki works as a medical receptionist for the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County, where she has been employed for 21 years.
Natalie Saling Durieux
Class of 2011
She was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a two-sport athlete. She participated in both volleyball and track and field for four years, earning six varsity letters. Natalie was on the 2008 freshman volleyball team, was co-captain of the reserve squad in 2009, and played a vital role on the varsity squad as a middle hitter in 2010 and 2011. She earned the most blocks award for each of her varsity seasons. She received Inter-Tri County League honorable mention and All-Columbiana County honorable mention. In track and field, Natalie earned four varsity letters for her prowess in the shot put and discus events. She earned the high-point field events award for three years and the Indian Dedication Award her sophomore year. The points she earned contributed to the Indians winning or placing in several meets. Natalie’s grades earned her awards also. She received the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association recognition for academic achievement twice, All-ITCL Academic Team all four years and the U.S. Army National Scholar Athlete Award. Natalie is currently a stay-at-home mom.
Jared Shilot
Class of 2014
He inducted into the Hall of Fame as a three-sport athlete. He received four varsity letters in football and numerous awards for his prowess as a receiver. When he graduated, he was the all-time leader in career receiving yards with 1,490, all-time season leader in receiving yards with 921 yards as he had 52 catches and scored 11 touchdowns that season. He participated in the Penn-Ohio Stateline Classic and earned numerous honors including first-team Morning Journal All-Area, first-team The Review All-Area first team, All-Quad County and Northeast Inland district team. He was also receiving Division V All-Ohio special mention in 2012.
Jared also played basketball. During his senior season he was a captain and helped lead the team to 16 wins, averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. He was named second-team Inter-Tri County League and honorable mention All-Columbiana County. Jared also participated in the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association dunk contest. While on the track team as a junior, Jared was ITCL runner-up in the 100-meter dash. He now serves as the Chief Financial Officer for Crossroads at Beaver Creek.
