Leetonia rallies by Wellsville

WELLSVILLE –Leetonia senior Ethan Mathia played like it was his last football game.

Mathia scored four touchdowns and ran for a career-high 327 yards in leading Leetonia past Wellsville, 25-13, Friday at Nicholson Stadium.

Leetonia — which came into the season with a 30-game losing streak — finishes at 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Mathia’s 327 yards on 35 carries are just short of the school record of 330 yards set by Marco Ferry against Lisbon in 2019.

After holding Wellsville on the Leetonia 5-yard line, Mathia later raced 71 yards to give the Bears a 19-13 lead with 5:19 left in the game.

A Dylan Brown interception at the Leetonia 44 set up the Bears’ final scoring drive, capped by Mathia’s 19-yard run at the 2:30 mark.

Mathia started off the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Dyan Johns on a fourth-and-12 play.

Wellsville marched 72 yards on the next possession and scored on Ethan Morris’ 1-yard run, giving the Tigers a 7-6 halftime lead.

Jeron Jackson’s 3-yard run put the Tigers up 13-6 with 4:23 to play in the third quarter.

On the first play after the kickoff, Mathia raced 59 yards to pull the Bears within 13-12.

Dylan Johns completed 2-of-6 passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. He also had an interception defensively.

Wellsville finishes at 0-10 overall and 0-7 in the EOAC.

The Tigers have lost 15 games in a row and have three wins in their last 32 games — all thre against Leetonia.
