Beaver Local triumphs in OVAC final
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Beaver Local’s volleyball team is all set to make a postseason run after a 26-24, 23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-10 win over Union Local on Saturday in the OVAC Class 4A championship at the ECO Center.
The win marked Beaver Local’s seventh OVAC title and first since 2021. The Beavers (20-2) have now appeared in the OVAC tournament 14 times in the 17 years under coach Sarah Lowe and her staff, including 11 straight appearances and five championship berths in the last six years.
Addie Thurik led Beaver Local with 13 kills and one block. Bria Boyd recorded four kills, 49 assists and nine digs. Eva McKnight had 11 kills and two blocks, while Giada Williams added 11 kills and three blocks. Lily Schrieber had 11 kills, five aces, 19 digs and three blocks. Karsyn Bowyer tallied two kills, 26 digs and four aces. Sydney McNear added seven kills and five digs, Perri Gilson had one ace and four digs and Taylor Pease contributed one ace and four digs.
“I think our preparation this past week paid off and we showed up and played as a team,” Thurik said. “We got down at some points but we found a way to battle back and pull it all together for the win. Now we can take this momentum from this game and I feel like we can make a run in the state tournaments with this team.”
The Beavers lost to Union Local in three straight sets on Sept. 27 in the Buckeye 8 championship.
“Today’s win was achieved with our compatibility and teamwork,” senior setter Bria Boyd said. “We had a few setbacks, but we were determined to come out with the win and bring home that trophy. I’m very proud of the way we brought ourselves back in those last two sets, playing with heart and grit. Overall, we have so much more ahead of us to accomplish, and this was just the start of that.”
Union Local’s Ameera Saunders led the Jets with 30 kills and 22 digs.Laken Vinskovich finished with 13 kills, four blocks, three service aces and 14 digs. Alli Kellaway finished with seven kills and four service aces. Ramsey Butler also had four blocks. Delaney Butler played her role as setter to the tune of 49 assists. Myah Martins scrapped out 16 digs.
“[Beaver Local’s] a good team, it was a good match,” Union Local head coach Kaye Sechrest said. “These girls don’t give up. I mean, we got down in a few games, and we just couldn’t come back from that. When you’re playing a good team, you can’t get down four or five points and expect to come back. We tried. ”
Beaver Local will host Indian Creek at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Div. IV sectional tournament play.
Union Local falls to 16-6.
