Chester improves to 14-2

SOUTH HILLS, Pa. — Chester wrapped up a 14-2 regular season and the top seed in the 50-plus baseball playoffs with a 10-2 victory over South Hills on Sunday.

Joe Krause had two doubles and singles for Chester, while Mike Homer and Frank Crain each had three hits. Steve Bell and Shawn Allen both had two hits.

Kevin Ferrell pick up the win on the mound.

Chester is set for the playoffs on Sept. 20 at a location to be announced.

Mount Union wins 38th straight opener

ALLIANCE — The faces change on the Mount Union football team, but the results stay the same.

Second-ranked Mount Union won their 38th straight season opener by topping 17th-ranked Wheaton (Illinois), 37-29, Saturday in front of 2,756 fans at Kehres Stadium.

The Purple Raiders led 37-7 in the fourth quarter before Wheaton scored three touchdowns in the final 11 minutes.

Freshman quarterback Mikey Maloney shined in his starting debut, completing 19 of 24 passes for 307 yards and five touchdowns. He took a medical redshirt last season after getting injured in the third game.

Senior transfers Jacob Cockrell and Kosta Thrasivoulou both had impressive Mount Union debuts. Cockrell had three receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns and Thrasivoulou led the Raiders with eight tackles.

Senior Nick Turner had a career-high eight catches for 89 yards, including a clutch 23-yarder to help seal the game in the fourth quarter as the Purple Raiders ran out the clock.

The Purple Raiders led in total yards (462-383).

Mount Union will play a nationally-ranked opponent for the second straight week at No. 23 Grove City (Pa.) this Saturday.
