Philadelphia Eagles celebrate another win
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles’ 24-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL season opener was delayed 65 minutes because of lightning in the area around Lincoln Financial Field late in the third quarter Thursday night.
Behind two touchdown runs from Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts, the Super Bowl champion Eagles led 24-20 with 4:44 left in the third quarter when the game was delayed. Play resumed at 11:30 p.m. and ended at 12:18 a.m.
The Eagles had the ball following a fumble recovery just before the delay.
The Eagles posted on the scoreboard that a severe warning had been issued by the National Weather Service that could produce severe conditions, including lightning and strong wind. The Eagles urged fans to leave the open seating areas and seek shelter in the concourse. The teams went to their locker rooms.
The Eagles unveiled their 2024 championship banner before the game. Then the real fireworks began, when defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott.
Skenes helps Pirates hold off Dodgers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes pitched six scoreless innings and earned his 10th win of the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Thursday night to complete a three-game series sweep.
Skenes (10-9) allowed two hits, struck out eight, and walked one. The right-hander finally got his record above .500 for the first time this season and lowered his ERA to a major league-best 1.98.
Skenes, last season’s NL Rookie of the Year who was 4-8 this season for the last-place Pirates, has won six of his last seven decisions.
The Dodgers were held to five hits and had their division lead cut to two games over idle San Diego.
Mookie Betts broke up the Pirates’ shutout bid with a leadoff home run in the ninth inning, and RBI singles by Pedro Pages and Miguel Rojas cut the deficit to 5-3. However, Colin Holderman struck out Ben Rortvedt to end it for his first save of the season.
