Potters strike down Brooke

WELLSBURG, W.Va. –East Liverpool’s boys soccer team thumped Brooke 5-1 on Tuesday.

“We played well,” East Liverpool (3-2-1) coach Devon Oliver said. “We had a couple kids out because of cross country, but our subs stepped up and played well.”

“We started out decent,” Brooke (0-5) head coach Joe Pepe said. “The game went pretty well. We came out and played well in the first half. We just made some mistakes. We made some young mistakes. That’ll do it. The sun is going to come up tomorrow, and the kids are going to get better. As long as they don’t get down on themselves, we will be fine. Myself and Coach (Konnor) Govey are proud of the kids. They did not quit. They left it all out on the field.”

Wyatt McCue collected a hat trick and two assists to lead the way for the Potters.

Nate Schwerha tallied a goal and an assist for the Potters, Jaymon Browning ended up with a goal and Robert Gump produced an assist.

“They didn’t really do anything different,” Pepe said. “They have a lot more experience. They attacked the ball. They made some young mistakes, but that is going to happen. They capitalized on our mistakes.

“Hopefully, in the next couple of games we will get on track. Brooke will never quit. The kids left it all out on the field. We’re 0-5, but I’m not upset.”

Lloyd Hendershot made nine saves in goal for the victors.

Brennen Krzywdik contributed the goal for the Bruins off of an assist by Zach Monk.

“Not really,”” Oliver said asked if the Bruins did anything unexpected in the match. “It’s tough coming here and playing Brooke. This is the first time we have beaten them since I have been coaching. It was nice to get this win.”

Bronson Pack made 11 saves in goal for the hosts.

East Liverpool is slated to play rival Beaver Local at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home up at Patterson Field. The Beavers shut out the Potters, 4-0, in the first game of the season Aug. 15 at home.

“The season has been up and down so far,” Oliver said.
