Oak Glen suffers first loss

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — Coming into a battle of unbeatens between Toronto and Oak Glen, both coaches knew execution would be key.

The Red Knights were the team that executed better in all phases of the game, leaving the Bears Den with an impressive 26-0 victory over the Golden Bears Friday night.

“That is a pretty good football team that has some athletes we had to prepare for, they’re all-around a much-improved Oak Glen team and we knew this was going to be a tough environment to come into,” Toronto head coach Jaret Aubiel said. “Our kids responded to the challenge well.”

Toronto scored a touchdown in all four quarters, showed a balanced attack offensively and turned in a great defensive performance to shutout an Oak Glen offense that came in averaging nearly 43 points per game.

“We take pride in our defense and trying to play complimentary football,” Aubiel said. “It thought we did that tonight. I thought we showed that we can be balanced, I’m overall happy with the defense and the offense. Our kids responded and did a good job.”

The Red Knights (5-0) out-gained the Golden Bears by a 374-123 margin and had a 15-10 advantage in first downs, though five of Oak Glen’s first downs were due to penalties. Toronto ran for 164 and passed for 210 with five different ball carriers and six different receivers spreading the wealth.

For Oak Glen, which dropped its first loss of the season falling to 3-1, two promising drives that ended with turnovers on downs in the red zone and two turnovers kept them from keeping pace.

“Hats off to Toronto, they came out and played physical and played a good football game,” Oak Glen head coach TJ Miller said. “A couple big things early got us, we gave up a couple big plays that resulted in scores. We knew this was going to be a test, there’s a lot for us to work on. We’re going to handle our business in house and get back to the drawing board, watch film and fix some things.”

Toronto’s defense did a strong job on Oak Glen standout Logan Murray, who was limited to 66 rushing yards and one catch for 22 yards.

“That was really our emphasis all week,” Aubiel said. “He’s a great athlete, it’s unfortunate he wasn’t able to play last year and it’s good to see him back out there. We had to prepare for him and out guys did a great job.”

Murray had 69 rushing yards in the first half, most of it in the opening quarter, but the Red Knights were able to keep him at bay for most of the final three quarters.

“They had a good game plan for Logan” Miller said. “They wanted to bracket him over top and really limit him, we’re going to have to get used to that and adapt because teams are going to key on him and rightfully so, he’s a great athlete. They had a good game plan and executed it well.”

Toronto opened the scoring with a long, methodical drive as Kenny Jett hauled in a 10-yard TD pass from Michael Henry (10 of 14 for 210 yards and two scores, 42 rush yards and rush TD) to cap a 13-play drive late in the first quarter.

After the defense got a stand inside its own 10, Henry fired a 13-yard strike to Brady Fair (five catches for 103 yards) in the final minute of the second quarter to make it a 14-0 Toronto lead at halftime.

Fair also had a pair of interceptions on defense.

On the first drive of the second half, Henry connected with Jett on a screen pass and he went 59 yards deep into Oak Glen territory, setting up a 3-yard Drake Bouscher plunge to make it 20-0 after three quarters.

Henry capped another nice drive in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone on a QB sneak after Oak Glen had turned the ball over on downs at the Toronto 11.

Cameron Carter had interception for the Golden Bears, while Toronto’s Heath Thomas had a TFL and Ethan Thomas registered a sack.
