CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s varsity volleyball team opened its season with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-21 win over Minerva on Tuesday.

Lily Schrieber had 10 kills, four assists and eight digs for the Beavers. Sydney McNear added nine kills, Eva McKnight eight kills, two digs and two blocks, and Giada Williams eight kills and two blocks. Bria Boyd contributed four kills, 29 assists and three digs, while Karsyn Bowyer had six digs. Addie Thurik had three kills.

The Beaver junior varsity also won, 25-15, 25-18. Madison Poppelriter led with four kills and a block, Mikayla Jungfleisch added five kills and three digs, and Ava Nocella and Madi Gaydos each had seven digs. Leah Schrieber recorded three kills, 18 assists and three digs.

Beaver Local’s freshman opened Monday with a 25-10, 23-25, 25-15 win over Canfield, led by Gianna Congrove’s 13 points.

Beaver Local will host Edison on Thursday.

Southern 3, Wellsville 0

WELLSVILLE — Southern got into the swing of things in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference opener with a 25-17, 25-17, 26-16 win over Wellsville on Tuesday.

Southern is 1-1, while Wellsville is 0-1.

Natalia Lopez topped the Indians with 12 points, six kills and one block. Allyssa Shroades totaled 10 points, two aces, three kills and eight assists. Katie Kellogg had five kills, Haylee Kellogg seven assists and Kiah Sloan three kills and two blocks.

The Indians host United on Thursday.

Wellsville hosts defending EOAC champion Columbiana on Thursday.

Columbiana 3, Lisbon 0

LISBON — Columbiana’s volleyball team opened its Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title defense with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 win over Lisbon on Tuesday.

For the Clippers (2-0, 1-0 in the EOAC), Evy Rapp had three kills, four aces, 11 points and six digs. Landry Smith added 12 kills and three blocks. Addison Dangler had eight kills, nine aces, two blocks and 14 points. Layla McCarth had a kill and seven digs. Eva Waller had a kill, three aces, 24 assists, eight points and two digs.

In jayvee action, Columbiana won 25-13, 25-14. Ella Eisenbraun had four kills, two aces, six assists and 11 points. Ava Marks had three kills, three aces, four points and five digs. Abby Barborak had four aces and two assists. Riley Fisk had three kills.

Columbiana is at Wellsville on Thursday for a varsity only match.
