Sloans on way to state

NORTH ROYALTON — A school-record effort was needed to get out of the Division III regional track and field meet Friday

The United girls and Southern Local each featured three state qualifiers to highlight area athletes at North Royalton High School.

United sophomore hurdler Brinsley Hiscox, Southern junior discus thrower Maddy Jones and Southern sophomore long jumper Kiah Sloan are on their way back to state, along with Kiah’s brother, Southern freshman Braxton Sloan in the 400-meter dash.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the tate track meet June 6-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University. All of the area Division III athletes will be competing on Friday.

Hiscox — who finished fourth at state in the 100 hurdles as a freshman — is heading to state in three events after running in two events last year.

She was fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.61 seconds) and joined senior Mary Boston and freshmen Taylor Simmons and Kylie Holmes on the 400 relay team that was third (50.77) and the 800 relay team that was fourth (1:46.85).

Boston and Hiscox also were members of the 400 relay team that reached state last year. Their time of 50.77 broke the school mark of 51.08 set last year.

The Eagles’ 800 relay team was 2/100ths of a second off the school record.

Southern is going to state in four events, including two by Jones.

Jones finished second in the discus with a toss of 127-feet-9, breaking her own school record. Her first four throws all went over 121 feet. She was a state qualifier two years ago. Jones also will be competing in the shot put after setting a school record in that event Wednesday.

Kiah Sloan finished second in the long jump at 17-6), missing her pesonal best from last week by two inches.

She was leading until South Range junior Gabby Spooner broke her school record with a jump of 17-7 on the last attempt to capture the regional title.

Spooner, a transfer from Columbiana, will have another busy week. She also plays on the South Range softball team and the Raiders will play Akron Manchester in the regional final at 11 a.m. Saturday at the YSU Softball Complex. The winner advances to the state semifinals on Thursday morning.

Braxton Sloan was the only area boy to survive the Division III regional, placing second in the 400 dash (49.97). He set the school record at the Columbiana County Meet.

Two of the top boys sprinters, United senior Danny Milburn and Lowellville junior Drew Modelski did not advance after suffering hamstring injuries in Wednesday’s preliminaries.
