NORTH ROYALTON — Only two made it through the first day of the Division III regional track and field meet Wednesday at North Royalton High School.

Southern junior shot putter Maddy Jones and Columbiana senior high jumper Kelsey Cameron earned state berths with second-place finishes.

Jones broke her own school record in the shot put with a toss of 39-feet-9 1/2. Her first five throws each went over 35 1/2 feet.

Cameron will join her at the state meet next Friday afternoon after clearing 5-foot-0 in the high jump.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the state track meet June 6-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.

It was a rough day for United senior Danny Milburn, who hurt his hamstring near the finish of the boys 100-meter dash and fell across the line. He advanced to the regional finals with the fourth-fastest time (11.13 seconds), but his status for Friday is in doubt.

He is a member of the Eagles’ 400-meter relay team that returned all four runners from last year’s state champion, but all four suffered injuries this year. Milburn ran with his leg wrapped and the Eagles did not advance to the regional finals after placing ninth. Milburn did not run in the 200 dash, an event he qualified for state in last year.

Three area athletes just missed state berths.

United freshman Taylor Simmons tied for fourth place in the girls high jump by clearing 4-10, but lost a jump-off to Newton Falls sophomore Kirra Howard for the final state berth.

Wellsville junior Clayten Kersey was fifth in the boys long jump with a pair of 21-1 3/4 jumps in his last three attempts. He was 2 1/4 inches out of fourth place.

United senior Trent Ellyson was fifth in the boys discus (152-7). He was a state qualifier last year.

The regional meet concludes Friday with the remaining field events at 4:30 p.m. and the running finals at 6 p.m.
