Oak Glen playing for state title
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Oak Glen softball team is one win away from its first state title since 1998.
The Golden Bears stacked two shutout wins on Wednesday in the opening day of the Class AA state tournament to themselves in position for a celebration this afternoon.
In the evening session, the Bears rode a strong pitching performance from sophomore Mattie Carney to blank Logan 3-0.
Logan came into the tournament ranked No. 1 by MaxPreps in Class AA. Oak Glen was No. 2.
Against the Wildcats, Carney struck out eight and walked one while allowing four hits. She threw 110 pitches with 76 going for strikes.
The Oak Glen offense only managed three hits against Logan ace Myleigh Adkins, but managed to put the pressure on early.
In the first Riley Bruce and Addie Smith started off the game with singles before Adkins retired the next two. Following a walk, Kayla Wright sent a ball into left field which resulted in an error which scored Bruce and Smith.
After hitting a triple in the third inning, Carney scored on a wild pitch to cap Oak Glen’s run total for the day.
Logan’s biggest threat came in the sixth when it had two runners on with one out.
Oak Glen (29-10) will go for the title and win No. 30 at 2:30 p.m. today on The Rock Field B. They’ll play the winner of Petersburg (22-11) and Logan (23-7), who play an elimination game at 10:30 a.m. If Oak Glen should happen to lose that game, one more will be played 30 minutes following.
In the morning session on Wednesday, Oak Glen opened the day with a 1-0 win over Petersburg.
Most of the action for Oak Glen occurred in the fifth inning. With one out Smith had a single and Carney followed with a double. Danica Holden was then intentionally walked. Smith got caught stealing home for the second out of the inning and Maddie Murray walked to load the bases again. On six pitches, Wright walked to drive in Carney for the only run of the game.
In the circle, Carney had 11 strikeouts and three walks. She threw 108 pitches of which 74 were for strikes.
