Indians battle with Golden Eagles

HANOVERTON — United’s two softball seniors delivered on senior day Monday.

Allyson Lacey had an RBI double and Grace Coffee an RBI single to highlight a four-run fourth inning that gave the Eagles a 6-4 win over Southern in Monday’s five-inning opener.

The second game was tied 2-2 before being suspended in the top of the second inning due to weather.

It sets the stage for the Division VI sectional opener as fifth-seeded United hosts 23rd-seeded Southern on May 14.

United is 16-5 overall and 9-2 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. Southern is 6-9 and 5-4 in league play.

Coffee went 2-for-2 in the opener and Chloe Angelo scored two runs.

Peyten Kekel was the winning pitcher, throwing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. She gave up one hit with four strikeouts and three walks.

Jillian Dietrich pitched the first 2 1/3 innings, giving up four runs, one earned, on five hits and one walk.

Southern took a 2-0 lead in the first as Gianna Pecorelli and Kennedy Lewis singled and both scored on Cheyenne Buzzard’s single to center field.

The Eagles came right back to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the first. Callie Koons led off with a single, advanced to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a throwing error. Angelo walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josie Wargo.

The Indians went up 4-2 in the second inning. Breena Frischkorn doubled to the center field fence and Raelea Carosiello singled. Frischkorn scored on a groundout by Pecorelli and Carosiello scored on a Makenna Jones single.

United took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Angelo opene with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errior. Wargo singled on scored on a Coffee single to tie the score at 4-4. Lacey hit a double to score Coffee and eventually came home on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead.

Addy Martin took the loss, striking out two and walking five.

Southern second baseman Aubree Pucci made an unassisted double play in the second inning.

In the first inning of the second game, Southern’s Kennedy Lewis hit a two-run homer, while United’s Grace Coffee had an RBI single and Brittany Miller drove in another run for a 2-2 tie.

Both teams are scheduled to play Wednesday as United hosts Carrollton and Southern entertains Youngstown East.

SALINEVILLE — United’s baseball team pulled closer to an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title with a 16-0 win over Southern in five innings on Monday.

The Golden Eagles are 15-5 and 8-0 in the EOAC. United can potentially clinch a share of the league title by the end of the week if it beats Southern on Thursday and Wellsville on Friday. Both games are at United. Columbiana and East Palestine both have two losses in the league.

Quentin Taylor had two singles, a double and an RBI. Cavan Jackson added three hits and three RBIs. Parker Newburn added a single and double with an RBI. Jason Pratt had two hits and three RBIs.

Kadin Schonauer was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Braden Rhodes had a single for the Indians. Mason Pitts was the losing pitcher with two strikeouts and six walks in two innings.

United is at Beaver Local today, weather pending.

Southern (2-11, 1-8) is at United on Thursday.

Oak Glen 2, Bellaire 1

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — Lucas Zoellers grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Josh Maher in the bottom of the seventh to help Oak Glen beat Bellaire 2-1 on Monday.

Christian Chappell, Maddox McKay and Cam Carter had hits for the Bears.

Maher was the winning pitcher with struck out three and walked one in seven innings.

Oak Glen (10-16) is at Steubenville Central today.
