Bears claim sixth OVAC crown
WHEELING, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s softball team rallied back from an early two-run deficit to claim its sixth Ohio Valley Athletic Conference softball title as the Golden Bears stopped Harrison Central 6-3 on Friday in the Class 4A title game at the I-470 complex.
The fourth-seeded Huskies (17-8) struck first with a two-run double by Mikayla Pelegran in the first inning.
Oak Glen (23-8) started the comeback in the third inning with two outs as Riley Bruce had a triple and then scored on an error. Two batters later, Mattie Carney had an RBI triple to tie it at 2. Danica Holden reached on an error that scored Carney to make it 3-2 Oak Glen.
Bruce added Oak Glen’s third triple that scored Kylie Robinson and Mikalyn Balch to make it 5-2 in the sixth. Bruce later scored on a sac fly by Addie Smith.
Carney was solid in the circle as she got the win with eight strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings. She threw 84 pitches with 64 for strikes. Holden came on in relief and struck out two and walked two in 1 1/3 innings.
Emma Skinner was the losing pitcher with a strikeout and no walks in three innings.
It was the third win for the Golden Bears over the Huskies this season.
Oak Glen’s previous OVAC titles came in 1998, 2002, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The game started at about 8 p.m. It was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. at the I-470 Complex but late afternoon thunderstorms jumbled the schedule. At one point, Oak Glen and Harrison Central were slated to play after the Class 5A game on Wheeling Park’s turf field, but with that game dragging on due to a delayed start, the Bears and Huskies were sent back to I-470.
