Southern Local stumbles on the road against Toronto

TORONTO — Home plate was a busy place.

Seventy-eight batters stepped to the plate, and 24 runners scored as the Toronto softball team tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth — the last coming on a wild pitch – to defeat Southern Local, 17-7, in six innings on an overcast Friday evening at Michael Simpson Park.

“It was crazy,” first-year Toronto (5-5) head coach Ralph Flowers said. “That game had a whole lot of everything. There was a whole of hitting and a whole lot of mistakes.

“The girls did a good job. The Southern girls did a good job. They hit the ball. They put the ball in play. We were able to adjust and come away with the win.”

The Indians sent 36 batters to the plate. The girls from Columbiana County drew seven walks and had four batters hit by a pitch, while taking advantage of four errors by the Red Knights.

“We had a lot of runners on base, but we stranded a lot,” Southern (1-4) assistant coach Chris Lewis said. “We stranded a lot of runners early.

“We made five errors, and that led to five runs. We couldn’t come up with the timely hits. The girls battled.

“We are working on our pitching. Pretty much there was only one girl who pitched the last four years. We have a new staff this year. We are starting over with our pitching. We are a work in progress. The girls battled. We are coming along.”

There were no 1-2-3 innings in the game.

The victors recorded at least one run in all six innings, while the visitors scored runs in three innings.

The Indians tallied three hits on the day. Individually, Kennedy Lewis delivered a three-run home run over the fence in left field, Aubree Pucci collected a single and an RBI and Breena Frischkorn finished with a single.

Addy Martin took the loss for the Indians. Martin struck out three and walked three. She also hit two batters and threw two wild pitches — one of which led to the game-ending run being scored.

“Kennedy had the big three-run home run,” Coach Lewis said. “She’s a senior. She is doing a real good job. Her and our catcher Gianna Pecorelli are our two seniors who have played a lot. They are leading the way. They are leading us in average and in on-base percentage. They’re trying. They are doing a good job.”

Toronto was scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday at Monroe Central, however, that was canceled Friday afternoon due to the weather. The Red Knights will now play a doubleheader against the Seminoles starting at noon May 10 on the road.

The Indians also had their doubleheader scheduled for Saturday canceled. Southern was slated to play two games against Malvern.

Southern is scheduled to play Heartland Christian at 5 p.m. Monday at home.
