Rhodes’ reach is far beyond the county
COLUMBIANA — Crestview junior Addison Rhodes’ talent has never been a secret.
After being a second-team All-Ohioan her first two seasons, Rhodes was named the Ohio Division V Player of the Year on Monday.
“We’ve always known how special she is,” Crestview coach Aaron Blatch said. “Now the rest of the state does too!”
Rhodes becomes the only first-team All-Ohioan for the Rebels’ girls basketball program. Chelsea Bowker was a second-team All-Ohioan as a senior in 2009.
“She’s certainly deserving,” Blatch said. “She would certainly acknowledge her teammates were a big part of it, too.
“It’s great for our team and our program and awesome for her.”
She guided Crestview to a 21-4 season and has a career record of 67-8 with three straight district finals appearances.
Rhodes averaged an area-best 26.1 points a game along with 7.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3.8 steals and 1.0 blocks.
“She’s such a humble kid,” Blatch said. “We’re excited for her. I can confidently say there is nobody in Ohio outworking her. She certainly earned it.”
Rhodes’ shooting separates her from the rest. She made school-record 81 three-pointers on the season, while shooting 51.3% from the field, 44.5% from three-point range and 89.3% from the foul line.
Besides her All-Ohio honors this season, Rhodes was the Northeast Inland District Player of the Year, Columbiana County Player of the Year, Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Morning Journal All-Area Player of the Year.
Rhodes’ career totals through her junior season are 1,687 points, 604 rebounds and 157 three-pointers.
She has six Division I full-ride offers from Youngstown State, Robert Morris, Duquesne, Bowling Green, St. Bonaventure and Toledo, along with one from Division II national power Ashland.
“It’s been cool, not just for her, during preseason workouts we had college coaches at the school every day,” Blatch said. “She’s going to put the same amount of effort and work whether in an empty gym or in front of a lot of college coaches.”
Rhodes is in her third season playing for a national AAU team out of Pittsburgh.
“That’s been a good avenue for playing in front of college coaches,” Blatch said. “She trains every day, between weight room, skill stuff and AAU, once or twice a day all year round.”
Rhodes plans on making a college commitment before her senior season.
“She’s going to play out this AAU season and see what happens and then probably make a decision,” Blatch said.
Crestview senior Luvrain Gaskins teamed with Rhodes to give the Rebels a potent one-two punch.
Gaskins received All-Ohio special mention for the third straight year.
She averaged 13.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 2.0 steals a game. She finished her high school career with 1,362 points and 1,138 rebounds.
Gaskins has accepted a full-tuition scholarship to play basketball for NAIA Bethel University in Indiana.
Columbiana also had two players honored — seniors Ava Heinrich and Ellie Venezia — after a 22-0 regular season and the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title.
Heinrich received special mention in Division VI and Venezia honorable mention.
Heinrich topped the Clippers in scoring (13.8), steals (3.5) and three-pointers (58). She shot 48% from the field.
Venezia had an all-around game for the Clippers, averaging 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.3 steals a game. She shot 51% from two-point range.
Also receiving special mention were Salem senior Reese Davidson-Chuck and West Branch sophomore Audrey Eaton in Division IV and Wellsville senior Bella Poppelriter in Division VII.
Davidson-Chuck was the Eastern Buckeye Conference Player of the Year and the Columbiana Classic MVP. She averaged a team-high 13.8 points per game along with 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.3 assists for the 11-win Quakers.
Eaton was one of two returning starters for the Warriors and led them to a 22-3 season and a second straight Eastern Buckeye Conference title. She topped the Warriors in scoring (8.9) and assists (3.3). She also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals a game.
Poppelriter was Wellsville’s leading scorer all four years, averaging 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and four steals a game this season. The Tigers won 12 games after almost not having enough players for a team. Poppelriter finished her career with 1,429 points (fourth all-time at Wellsville), 708 rebounds, 317 steals and 113 blocks .
Getting honorable mention were East Liverpool senior Kenzie Headley and West Branch junior Tallie Muniz in Division IV.
Headley’ play led the Potters to a 10-win season. She averaged 12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.1 blocks a game.
Muniz was the Warriors inside leader in rebounds (4.7), blocked shots (1.3) and field goal percentage (54%). She was second on the team in scoring (7.0).
