Oak Glen moves on to state final
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s volleyball team did as expected on Tuesday during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission’s Class AA state tournament at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
In the quarterfinal the top-seeded Bears whipped No. 8 seed South Harrison 25-14, 25-10, 25-5. Oak Glen came back in the evening session and defeated No. 5 seed Buffalo 25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21.
Against Buffalo, McKenzi Martin had 19 kills and reached 1,000 digs for her career. Averi Martin added 15 kills, while Brooklyn Six had 14 kills. Mikalyn Balch had 48 assists and went over 1,000 assists for her career. Addison Smith had 11 digs, while Keira Vick had six digs. Tia Vick chipped in 11 digs and three aces.
Against South Harrison, McKenzi Martin had 12 kills, while Averi Martin and Brooklyn Six had seven kills each. Reecelyn Craig contributed five kills, while Mikalyn Balch had 30 assists. Addison Smith had nine digs, while Kendall Six added three digs.
Oak Glen (28-7-3) will play No. 2 Philip Barbour (43-13-1) in a rematch of the 2023 Class AA finale at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. Philip Barbour beat No. 6 Charleston Catholic 25-14, 25-19, 25-14 in the other state semifinal. The Class AAA and AAAA quarterfinals and semifinals will be held today.
Philip Barbour beat Oak Glen 22-25, 25-15, 25-14 on October 16 at a neutral site. The Colts have six state titles, while Oak Glen is going for its ninth. The Golden Bears won last season’s state final 25-12, 27-25, 25-20.
There are 28 total teams in Class AA in the state of West Virginia.
