Bears place four on All-West Virginia
Oak Glen’s volleyball team made it back to the Class AA state championship match this season and for that the West Virginia Sports Writers Association honored four Golden Bear players with All-West Virginia distinctions in Class AA.
Senior McKenzie Martin was named to the first team, while junior Averi Martin was also named to the first team. Senior libero Addison Smith was a second team pick, while junior Brooklyn Six was an honorable mention. The Golden Bears went 28-8-3 and lost to Philip Barbour in a five-set thriller in the state championship match.
“I am very proud of McKenzi, Averi, Addison and Brooklyn for being named to the All-West Virginia teams, but it takes a TEAM to receive accolades,” Saddler said. “Each player on our roster made an impact this season. I am very proud of Oak Glen volleyball. Every player on our roster deserves recognition. It takes a TEAM.”
A senior standout and cornerstone of Oak Glen’s success, McKenzi Martin capped her career with another first team selection. Over her four-year career, Martin amassed 1,399 kills, 1,014 digs, 163 aces, 126 blocks, 64 assists and 843 points in 402 sets played.
“McKenzi has had an outstanding career at Oak Glen,” Saddler said. “She has been a leader on and off the court for our team over the last four years. She has surpassed 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her high school career. She played a vital role in our offense and defense. McKenzi is a hard worker and always strives to be the best. She is going to do great things at Fairmont State University. We are so proud of her.”
Averi Martin returned to the All-West Virginia list as well as she was a second team pick last season. In her career so far, Martin has accumulated 782 kills, 251 blocks, 89 aces, 149 digs and 369 points in 327 sets played.
“Averi has had an impressive junior season,” Saddler said. “She played a vital role offensively for our team, being an offensive threat in transition. She also impacted the floor defensively for our team, as we relied on her block at the net. Averi is always asking questions and wanting to get better with every rep and practice. She is a leader in our gym, by her actions and her voice.”
Addison Smith was recognized for her defensive prowess. Over her career, Smith totaled 778 digs, 1,550 serve receptions, 165 assists, six aces and 48 points in 229 sets played.
“Addison has had a tremendous career at Oak Glen,” Saddler said. “She has been someone who leads by example and is a vocal leader in our gym. Addison played a vital role in our defense and serve receive patterns. She was an extremely consistent defensive player for us. She played aggressive and fearless, and those characteristics made her a tough libero.”
Six has been a consistent attacker for the Golden Bears. In her career to date, Six has recorded 581 kills, 53 blocks, 125 aces, 216 digs, eight assists,and 483 points in 284 sets played.
“Brooklyn played a vital role offensively for our team,” Saddler said. “She was a threat on both pins and known for her different serve. She is a hard worker and extremely coachable. She always embraces her role and supports her teammates.”
