CALCUTTA — Union Local scored on its first three possessions to take the early lead and its defense pitched a second-half shutout as the visiting Jets defeated Beaver Local 41-14 at Pastore Field Friday night.

With the setback, Beaver Local is now 2-4, while unbeaten Union Local improved to 6-0. It was the Beavers’ first-ever loss to the Jets as Beaver Local still leads the all-time series, 3-1.

“Credit to them, we had trouble getting off the field,” said Beaver Local head coach Mike McKenzie. “Their playmakers made plays when they needed to and they moved the ball up and down the field.”

“We knew it was going to be a tough environment coming up here but I’m super proud of our boys,” said Union Local head coach Bernie Thompson. “They’re resilient. We had a great week of practice and just came up and showed out well in all three phases, really.”

In a game in which both teams were successful moving the football, Beaver Local was hurt by two lost fumbles and also was turned away at the Jets’ 15 and 19-yard lines during the game.

Union Local, which piled up 484 yards of offense, was led by running back Brody Perzanowski who rushed for a game-high 160 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown.

“Brody our sophomore running back, is a great player and had a great night,” said the Union Local head coach. “And it starts up front, our linemen lead the way and I’m just proud of everyone’s effort, the coaching staff included.”

Beaver Local, which had 347 yards of offense, was led by quarterback Taylor Johnston with 112 yards on 22 carries. However, Johnston was injured in the second half which limited the Beavers’ offense.

Union Local, which scored on three of its four first-half possessions, set the tone on the game’s first play as Perzanowski cut through a hole in the middle of the field and raced 60 yards to score. The Jets added the PAT kick and led 7-0 just 12 seconds into the game.

After a Beaver Local drive was stopped when the Beavers lost a fumble at the Jets’ 19, the visitors capitalized, marching 81 yards to score on a five-yard scoring run around the left side by quarterback Isaiah Tomolonis. The PAT failed.

“We had a couple turnovers that were big,” said McKenzie. “I mean, we didn’t punt until the fourth quarter.”

“It was the bend but not break defense,” stated Thompson.

Trailing 13-0 after one quarter, the Beavers got on the board on their second offensive series when they impressively marched 59 yards to score on a four-yard run by running back Brock Severs. Caleb Mays added the PAT kick and the Beavers trailed 13-7 with 8:47 left before halftime.

But the Jets answered when quarterback Colby Carpenter found talented receiver Dre Saunders with a 48-yard scoring pass. The PAT boot was good and the Jets increased their lead to 20-7.

But Beaver Local came right back just before the break when the Beavers, led by several outstanding runs by Johnston, who had 111 yards rushing in the first half, drove 75 yards to find the end zone on another four-yard scoring bolt by Severs with just 29.8 seconds before intermission. Mays added the PAT kick and the Beavers trailed 20-13 at the break.

Union Local led in total offense at halftime, 316-207.

After a scoreless third quarter, Union Local iced the game away with three fourth-quarter scores on a 15-yard scoring pass from Tomolomis to Peyton Causby, a 49-yard pass from Carpenter to Saunders and an eight-yard run by Causby.

“It was a great game and kudos to Beaver Local,” said Thompson. “They have a great team and a great coaching staff.”

“I love our kids and I think our seniors have done a great job,” said McKenzie. “This (one-sided loss) is not something I expected to happen tonight but we’ve got to keep fighting and keep going.”

Beaver Local will entertain the Hubbard Eagles next Friday evening.

Union Local will host the winless Cambridge Bobcats next Friday night.
