SALINEVILLE--Southern powered its way through the cold and windy weather conditions to edge East Liverpool 16-3 in five innings on Friday.

Southern players, including starting pitcher Alexis Ensinger, had different methods of staying warm throughout the game.

"It was definitely something that was interesting, I just had to keep my composer in the circle," Ensinger said. "I used hand warmers, I had my jacket in the dugout and I did lots of running."

Southern improves to 3-2, while East Liverpool falls to 0-4.

Ensinger led the Indians in the circle with 11 strikeouts and four walks, while collecting two hits, including a single in the second inning that gave the Indians a 8-0 advantage.

Cheyenne Buzzard also picked up two hits for the Indians, including a double in the second inning that gave the Indians a 11-0 lead.

Southern had plenty of time to practice hitting due to a large amount of games being canceled and it paid off.

"All these games were postponed all week due to rain," Southern coach Brent Boyle said. "All we did all week long was and work on the fundamentals of hitting and it showed tonight. Their hard work really showed off tonight."

While Southern collected eight hits at the plate, East Liverpool struggled only managing to produce one hit.

"I think the biggest thing that got us today was that we struggled to get the ball in play," East Liverpool coach Ryian Burson said. "We struggled pitching both ways as well."

Tatum Fink was the starting pitcher for the Potters as she allowed eight earned runs on one hit with five walks in one inning of work. Cate Davis worked three innings in relief, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Alanna McGonigal had the only hit for the Potters when she singled in the first inning.

The one thing the Potters improved since the last time it played Southern was one error in the field.

"I happy how we played in the field," Burson said. "Overall, I think we are a lot better than what we are showing."

The game delayed briefly in the bottom of the first inning due to sleet and snow.

East Liverpool will play a doubleheader at Sandy Valley on Saturday. Southern will host Wellsville on Tuesday.
