EAST LIVERPOOL--East Liverpool had a comfortable time on Thursday as the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference tournament waits in the wings as it powered past Beaver Local 62-25 at Potter Fieldhouse.
"It is huge for our girls confidence," East Liverpool coach Josh Reed said. "Beaver Local always plays us tough, so to come out and get a big win like that was good for their confidence going into the OVAC tournament."
"I'm very excited," East Liverpool point guard Aynsley Galeoti said. "The hype will definitely carry over for us."
East Liverpool,10-8 on the season, jumped out went on a 17-6 run in the second quarter that put the Potters up 35-11 at halftime.
"We just try and keep moving forward and don't let up on the little things," Reed said. "We wanted to execute and play clean."
The Potters opened up the third quarter on a fast 12-4 run that was started when Galeoti had a layup with 7:20 left in the third period. Galeoti later had a layup with 4:32 to go in the third that gave the Potters a 31-point advantage.
"I like running and being out there," Galeoti said. "It is more of a love to actually do that more than anything."
Galeoti finished with 14 points while Kenzie Headley led the Potters with 16 points.
Beaver Local, 5-13 on the season, knew it had a tough task coming in as the team's leading scorer Peyton Roberts is out with a knee injury.
"We knew Liverpool was going to be challenging, but we had a really good practice yesterday," Beaver Local coach Tony Sorge said. "We came in confident that we would compete with them, so I was a little disappointed with the outcome of this game."
Beaver was led by Bella McLevey with seven points, while Karsyn Bowyer and Calli Sorge each had five points.
East Liverpool will now focus on its OVAC Class 4A semifinal on Monday at Indian Creek (16-3).
"Indian Creek is tough," Reed said. "(Indian Creek) has every aspect of basketball. They play the game right. They full court press you and push the pace on offense, so we are in for a tall task, but we will go out there and give it our best shot and see what happens."
East Liverpool will continue to work on the little things to prepare.
"We have to have good ball movement and just handling in general," Reed said. "We give up a lot of unforced turnovers and our girls just have to have more confidence in their ability to handle the ball."
Beaver Local will meet up with Southern in an OVAC consolation contest on Monday at the Indians' gym.
"That is going to be tough," Sorge said. "They are scrappy and have a couple of good players, so we have our work cut out for us."
East Liverpool won the jayvee game 25-5.
Presley Jones led the Potters with nine points, while LaNese Andrews had eight points.
Pemberley Boso and Mallory Miller each had two points for the Beavers.
