CALCUTTA--The Oak Glen boys basketball team had to take a different route to Beaver Local on Tuesday due to structural damage of the Jennings Randolph Bridge.
"It was about 25 minutes, we had to go through Midland and then up through the East End," Oak Glen coach Jerry Everly said. "Everybody made it, we just had the kids go home with their parents tonight, so they could get home a little quicker, but that was the only change we made."
It was also a longer night on the court for the Golden Bears as Beaver Local turned in a 83-62 win.
"They (Beaver Local) come at you in waves, they are a really talented team," Everly said. "We gathered ourselves and I couldn't be more proud of the guys on how they battled, you start a game 1 for 19 and still come back and fight to pull within in 12 that just tells me that the character of this team is going to be fun to coach."
Beaver Local (2-2) had strong performance to open up at home after finishing 1-2 for the first three road games. Oak Glen fell to 1-2.
"It is great to get back to .500 and it is great to open the gym up for the community," Beaver Local coach Nick Miller said. "We played very hard, we didn't play perfect, but 83 points on the board gets the fans excited and it is a good start."
"It was definitely great having the home energy on our side tonight," Beavers senior Austin Cline said. "I know at the start of our schedule we have a lot of away games, but we are going to have to overcome that, but it definitely felt great being at home."
After a 42 point loss to rival East Liverpool on Friday, the Beavers found the momentum that it needed.
"(The Liverpool game) left a bad taste in our mouths," Beaver Local coach Nick Miller said. "I give credit to these guys because they came back in Saturday morning ready to work, they weren't hanging their heads or feeling sorry for themselves, they were ready to move on to tonight."
After a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Beavers outscored the Golden Bears 27-14 in the second quarter to take a 39-21 lead at halftime.
"I think we just knew in the first quarter we were a little lousy," Cline said. "Second quarter we finally started playing our basketball, running in transition, getting easy layups and that's what led to our big run."
The Golden Bears bounced back in the third quarter as it outscored Beaver Local 20-15, but Beaver Local stood strong in the final quarter of play to stop the Golden Bears short of a comeback.
Cline put up 31 points to lead the Beavers in scoring, while also contributing seven rebounds and five assists.
"It feels great," Cline said. "I love to contribute to this team as much as I can and get us a win."
Owen Hill added 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, while Hunter Warrick had 12 points and two assists. Evan Stephenson had eight points and nine rebounds. Taylor Johnston had five points, five assists and two steals.
