Shroades gives golden performance

CHICAGO -- Southern Local senior basketball player Ashley Shroades had a stellar showing in helping the Eastern Ohio Sports Complex All-Star Team win the 17U gold championship in the Pearl Division at the Nike Basketball Tournament of Champions on Saturday at the McCormick Place Convention Center.

The Eastern Ohio Sports Complex All-Stars went 5-2 in the 12-team Pearl Division and defeated IK Eos Sweden 50-48 in the championship game.

In the title game, EOSC trailed by 10 points but Shroades hit a long three to put her team up 45-44 with less than a minute left.

The team from Sweden came right back and hit a three to make it 47-45. Shroades matched that three to put the EOSC stars up 48-47.

The Sweden team tied it at 48 with a free throw with 10 seconds left.

Austintown Fitch's Destanie McCullough hit two free throws with .5 seconds left to lift the EOSC team to the title.

The Nike Tournament of Champions featured 450 teams from kids ranging from ages 13 to 18.

A total of 80 courts were used for the four-day event.
