Jones will throw at state
NORWAYNE -- Southern freshman Maddy Jones is making plans for the state track meet.
Jones finished fifth in the girls discus at the Norwayne Division III regional meet Friday, but claimed at at-large berth.
The top four finishers in each of the four regionals advance to the state meet along with two at-large qualifiers.
Jones had a personal-best 125-feet -4 at Norwayne.
She has the 10th-best throw entering the state meet and will throw at 1 p.m. Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Wayt wins two national titles
PITTSFORD, New York -- Mount Union senior Kenadee Wayt had a day for the ages Saturday, racing to two national championship titles, two school records and four All-American awards at the final day of the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.
Before the weekend Wayt already had the most All-American awards in Mount Union women's track and field history and with her two victories Saturday she became the leader in championships won at the Track and Field Championship for the women's track and field team.
The former Wheeling Central Catholic High School standout began her day at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex by finishing eighth in the 400-meter relay (53.22 seconds). Then she took the victory in the 400 meters leading from the start in a time of 54.33 seconds. Wayt came back just over an hour later, winning the 200 meters winning in a school-record time of 23.95. In the final event, Waythelped the Purple Raiders' 1600-meter relay team to a third-place finish in a school-record 3:42.50.
Mount Union finished seventh in the women's team standings with 27 points.
Wisconsin-La Crosse won its fourth national outdoor championship with 67 1/2 points. The Eagles also won in 2015, 1984 and 1983.
Chester wins second straight
CALCUTTA -- The Chester Old Timers baseball team improved to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Youngstown at Beaver Local High School on Sunday.
Mike Logston had three hits to lead the winners. Eric Sampson and Casey Arnott each had a double and single and Harold Beatty had two singles.
Scot Oehlstrom split the game on the mound with Dave Smith and got the win.
Chester will play Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beaver Local.
Coe eliminates Hiram softball
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The No. 21 Coe College softball team ended Hiram's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Super Regional on Saturday.
The Kohawks held off Hiram for a 2-1 win in Game 2at Clark Field to finish off the best-of-three series.
Hiram was limited to one run and five hits in two losses to Coe.
Hiram ends at 27-16, tying for the second most in a season in program history.
Coe (37-19) advances to the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time since 2009.
The Kohawks will open against No. 2 Linfield at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bell Park in Marshall, Texas.
Coca-Cola 600 postponed until Monday
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Charlotte Motor Speedway has announced the Coca-Cola 600 has been postponed until Monday due to wet weather.
The Cup Series race will begin at 3 p.m. ET (FOX). NASCAR has moved the Xfinity Series up to an 11 a.m. start on Monday (FS1). The Xfinity Series race had been scheduled to run Saturday but was previously postponed.
Cup Series points leader William Byron will start on the pole for the Cup Series race after qualifying was rained out Saturday night.
It marks the first time the race has been moved to Memorial Day due to weather since 2009.
Ericsson close to victory
