Beverly, Browning marking a mark
GENEVA, Ohio -- Two East Liverpool High School graduates had high places in the 14-team Midwest Indoor Track and Field Open on Saturday.
Walsh University sophomore Cameron Beverly won the men's high jump by clearing 6-foot-4 3/4 at the SPIRE Institute. There were 16 jumpers.
Wheeling (W.Va.) University sophomore Izaiha Browning ran on the second place men's distance medley team (11:36.60)
Seton Hill (Pa.) graduate student Alexis Cunningham of East Palestine topped area women, placing third in the mile run (5:09.76) and third in the 3,000 meters (10:40.1).
Mount Union sophomore Halle Cochran of Salem ran on the third-place 1600-meter relay (4:11.34) and was ninth in the 800 meters (2:26.08).
Walsh sophomore Julie White of Minerva was 10th in the 400 meters (62.40 seconds) and 10th in the 1600-meter relay (4:35.17).
Indians, Bears make OVAC tournament
Oak Glen and Southern's girls basketball teams have qualified for the OVAC Tournament.
The Golden Bears (5-9) finished third in the Class 4A standings and will travel to second-place Harrison Central (11-7) on Monday for the semifinal. Indian Creek (13-4) will host Buckeye Local (7-11) in the other semifinal.
Southern (12-4) will travel to top-seed River (17-1) in the Class 2A semifinal. The Indians finished fourth in the standings.
Top-seed Wheeling Central (13-2) will host Monroe Central (13-5) in the other Class 2A semifinal.
The finals are set for Feb. 4 at Harrison Central High School. The Class 2A final will be at 10 a.m. with 3A to follow at noon. Class 4A will be held at 2 p.m. with Class 5A at 4 p.m. and Class 1A at 6 p.m.
Consolation games will be released today.
Penguins activate defenseman Letang
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins activated veteran defenseman Kris Letang off injured reserve, clearing the way for him to play Tuesday night against Florida.
The 35-year-old Letang has been out since sustaining a lower-body injury during an overtime loss to Detroit on Dec. 28. He spent time in his native Montreal during his absence following the death of his father earlier this month.
It's been a difficult season for Letang, who signed a six-year contract extension with the Penguins over the summer and has two goals and 14 assists in 29 games. Letang missed two weeks in November and December after suffering a stroke for the second time in eight years.
Pittsburgh is hoping his return can provide a boost. The Penguins, who have reached the playoffs 16 straight seasons -- the longest active postseason streak in major North American team sports -- entered Tuesday in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Also Tuesday, the Penguins placed defenseman Jan Rutta on long-term injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 14 and put forward Kasperi Kapanen on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 18.
Corum's Camaro stolen in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan All-America running back Blake Corum reported his car stolen earlier this month in Ann Arbor.
Corum's camouflage wrapped 2017 Camaro adorned with his BC2 logo was stolen from a parking garage between Jan. 13 and Jan. 16, according to Ann Arbor Police Department records.
Corum tweeted Tuesday that his "parents used their hard earned money" to buy him the car after he graduated from high school.
"God bless whoever stole it," he tweeted.
The car was stolen shortly after Corum made a relatively surprising decision to return to play as a senior for the Wolverines.
The 5-foot-8, 210-pound Corum had a season-ending left knee injury against Illinois on Nov. 19 after running for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns. He had 952 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2021.
Corum makes money with name, image and likeness agreements and has said he gives away half of what he makes to Michigan offensive linemen and the community, including an annual giveaway that has donated hundreds of turkeys.
Cadets soar past Potters
WHEELING, W.Va. -- Wheeling Linlsy used an aggressive up-tempo effort to down East Liverpool 68-44 on Tuesday in boys basketball action.
East Liverpool falls to 12-3. Linsly is 10-5.
Cohen Pease hit a three-pointer at the first quarter buzzer to put the Potters up 10-7, but the Cadets came back to take a 25-23 halftime lead before expanding that lead to 49-40 at the end of the third quarter.
East Liverpool returns to Wheeling on Friday to play Wheeling Park.

Potters boys on a roll
MINERVA -- The East Liverpool boys bowling team captured a 2,560-2,429 win over Minerva Tuesday at Minerva Bowl.
Gavin Maze had games of 266-230 for a 496 series and Nate Kelly had games of 208-213 for a 421 series to lead the Potters. Isaiah Frazier topped Minerva with games of 255-197 for a 452 series.
Minerva won the girls match 2,400-2,371, with Sierra Cress getting games of 242-178 for a 420 series.
The Potters were paced by Paige Grimes with games of 189-238 for a 427 series, Addison Rudibaugh with a 220 game and 391 series and Danni Riggle with a 205 game.
Both East Liverpool teams are 9-3 and will host Brooke on Thursday.
Oklahoma State hires Bryan Nardo
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma State announced Tuesday it has hired Bryan Nardo as defensive coordinator.
This past season, Nardo was defensive coordinator at Division II Gannon University under head coach Erik Raeburn, a former Mount Union player and coach.
In Nardo's only season at the school in Erie, Pennsylvania, Gannon saw its total defense improve from 393.3 yards allowed per game in 2021 to 287.4 -- the school's lowest total surrendered in 20 seasons.
"I'm excited about the addition of Bryan Nardo as our defensive coordinator," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said in a statement. "He's a young energetic, bright football coach who brings 10 years of coordinating experience with him. He's been successful, and his innovative system has helped win games everywhere he's been."
Before coaching at Gannon, Nardo was linebackers coach at Youngstown State in 2020 and 2021. He previously spent eight years as defensive coordinator at Emporia State. He was named the Great Lakes Football Conference Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011 after his lone season at Missouri S&T.
Nardo played for Bellaire St. John High School.
Mount's Wayt earns big honor
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union senior Kenadee Wayt has been named NCAA Division III National Field Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Wayt, who earned All-American honors in the indoor 60, 200, 400 and 4×400 a year ago, went 1:33.45 in the 600 meters, to set the school record by over six seconds.
She also broke her own school record in the 200 running 24.75 seconds, which is good for the top spot in Division III currently while also competing in the 60 running a 7.70 good for fourth in Division III.
Wayt finished second in both events at the Midwest Indoor Track and Field Open at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday.
She is the first female from Mount Union to get the national award and just the second ever in Mount Union history. She was a standout at Wheeling Central Catholic High School.

ALLIANCE -- Another Eastern Buckeye Conference girls basketball title will be decided when Salem travels to Marlington tonight.
The Dukes have won the last two EBC titles, outright last season and sharing it with Salem in the 2020-21 season.
Marlington, ranked fourth in Division II state poll, is 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the EBC.
Salem is 14-2 and 7-1 in the EBC. Carrollton is third in the league standings at 4-4.
Marlington has won three straight against the Quakers over the last two seasons, including a 54-45 decision on Dec. 17.
Marlington's lone loss was to eighth-ranked Canfield, 49-48, on Dec. 19. Two days later, Salem won at Canfield, 47-33.
The junior varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. today.
