Class of 2020 finally passes through Southern Hall of Fame

SALINEVILLE — The Salineville-Southern Local Athletic Hall of Fame recently inducted the Class of 2020, which was postponed due to the pandemic. Inductees include:

Amy Mobley Harker (1982) was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a three-sport athlete. In volleyball she contributed to the reserve squad having a 14-1 record her Sophomore year; the varsity squad going 19-4 and being Wellsville Tournament runner-up, Tri-County League champs and district runner-up her junior year and varsity going 18-7 and being TCL and District Runner-Up her senior year. In basketball as a sophomore she helped the team go 17-6, win the TCL, sectional and district championships.

Her junior year, Amy was All-Columbiana County honorable mention and second-team as the Indians again won the TCL and were sectional runner-up. In the 1981-82 season, Amy was named to The Review third team, Morning Journal honorable mention and second-team TCL and county as the team went 20-4 winning the TCL again and being sectional champs and district runner-up. In track Amy was a standout in the high jump and discus. Her sophomore year she won the TCL in discus and set the sectional record with a throw of 111-feet-5.

Her junior year she was third at the TCL meet but won the County meet in the discus. Her senior year she was second at county, fifth at TCL and district champ in the discus. She tied for fourth in high jump at TCL and qualified for regional in both events. Her discus record stood for a long time at Southern Local.

Robin Smith Higgins (1984) was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a two-sport athlete in volleyball and basketball. Awards she received on winning volleyball teams included MVP, first-team All-Columbiana County, first-team TCL, first-team District 1 All-Star and first- team Salem News and The Review All-Area teams. Awards received on winning basketball teams included the Sophomore Award as a part of the 20-4 team that reached district finals and co-TCL champs. She also received the Senior Award and was a first-team TCL unanimous selection. She averaged 15 points and six rebounds per game to earn her these accolades.

Marcy Loch Zehentbauer (1984) was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a three-sport athlete. She received two varsity letters in volleyball, two in basketball and one in track. Her volleyball statistics included 138 points, 234 bumps, 134 spikes, 17 blocks and 20 dinks. She was named first-team TCL and second-team All-Columbiana County and District 1. Marcy was a member of the winning basketball team (20-4) that went to district finals. She was a tri-captain her senior year for her leadership qualities and was honorable mention All-County. In track she received a varsity letter her senior year as a high jumper.

Phillip Grodhaus (1988) was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a two-sport, six-varsity letter winner athlete. He earned three letters in football and three letters in basketball. In football he was a defensive end and a running back as well as being captain his junior year. Basketball however was where Phillip was a standout; earning a varsity letter every year and setting the three-point shot record and single season assist record (88). He had career high assists of 278. For his efforts Phillip received the following accolades- All-Columbiana County and TCL honorable mention and he played in the Columbiana County Classic.

Nathan Melhorn (2009) was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a three sport athlete. He earned four letters in football and two each in basketball and baseball. He received numerous accolades in football prowess- second-team Division IV All-Ohio, first-team district, first-team ITCL, first-team Columbiana County, first-team Morning Journal All-Area and The Review Offensive player of the Year. He led the Indians to a 7-3 season as a senior, their second winning season in 30 years. He finished with around 3,000 career yards rushing, running for 1,859 yards and 17 touchdowns on 235 carries (7.9) as a senior. He held Southern Local’s record for most rushing yards in a game (307) and longest run (90 yards).
