Oak Glen triumphs in double OT

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. -- It took an eight extra minutes, but Oak Glen secured its first victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating Madonna 68-60 in double overtime.
In the second overtime period, Madonna scored first, but the Bears scored the last 10 points to pull away for the win. Oak Glen improves to 1-2 while Madonna falls to 0-2.
"We are starting to get some confidence," Oak Glen coach Jerry Everly said. "Guys are getting some experience and they aren't a nervous wreck right off the bat. We are starting to settle down as a ball club and having Jacob (Clark) back in there to get some rebounds, that helps you."
Everly added "having that presence inside to clean up the boards helps us get into an offense."
Oak Glen senior forward Jacob Clark returned for the Bears after missing the opening two games with a knee injury. Clark briefly left the game due to cramps but did return.
"I have been playing with him my whole life and it just makes the game easier," Oak Glen senior point guard Gage Patterson said. "I am glad he is back."
Patterson led the Bears with 24 points and hit two free throws with 1.5 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game and send the game into the second overtime.
"We had to play for their zone and their man because we weren't sure what they were going to run, When I saw man, I felt good that we were going to get at least a layup," Everly said about the tying possession. "Then for (Gage) to step up and hit those free throws is so huge.
"He is a leader, and he is a heck of a player," Everly added about Patterson. "For him to hit those shots was great."
"I feel comfortable with the ball all the time, but I am glad that I have Jeremy, Jacob, Jontae and all five of the guys on the court," Patterson said. "I trust every one of them every single day."
"Gage is playing with a new group of guys," Everly said. "Jacob being in there helps him because he has been playing with him since he was little, but he trusts Jered, Chaise, Jeremy and Jontae and the guys off the bench. He understands that we got some guys that can help him, and it doesn't have to be all Gage. Then he plays within himself and he makes crucial plays."
Jered Hissam added 15 points and four three-pointers for the Bears.
"He is playing big time," Everly said about Hissam. "It's really good. It's really good for him to play like that. The way he is playing is fantastic and we need it.
"He is always thinking shot," Everly added.
For Madonna, missed opportunities and a late technical foul down by three in the second overtime was the deciding factor.
"First, we lost our composure," Madonna coach George Vargo said. "Second reason we lost the game was we didn't finish in the paint. We had a layup in the lane to go ahead and we missed it. Third reason was you win basketball games at the foul line. That's the difference in this game."
"We lost our composure, we missed foul shots and we missed a shot at the rim," Vargo said. "That's the ballgame. Oak Glen kept the composure and made their fouls shots and that was the difference."
Santino Arlia led Madonna with 18 points.
Madonna had a balanced scoring effort throughout the game.
"We don't have a game player yet," Vargo said. "We have players, but we don't have a game player yet."
For Oak Glen, it is about riding the momentum of the first win and stringing wins together.
"I am glad to get out of this slump of two games," Patterson said. "Now we need to move on to Friday and see if we can do against Wheeling Central."
Oak Glen will host Wheeling Central Friday.
Madonna will travel to Cameron Friday.
