Chester wins opener
BOARDMAN -- The Chester Old Timers opened the 2020 Youngstown 50-plus baseball season with a 8-2 win over Niles at Field of Dreams on Saturday.
Dave Smith hit a home run and a single to lead Chester. Will Smith and Doug Comm each had two hits.
Bill Sattler got the win and Dave Smith the save. Chester plays Youngstown at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boardman High School.
Training suspended
Shadyside and Bellaire high schools suspended all athletic conditioning and skills training over the weekend due to coronavirus concerns.
Beallaire school officials said they were made aware of a possible COVID-19 case involving an athlete.
A Shadyside school official said it is "strictly precautionary."
There is no timetable for when the school teams will be able to resume training.
Another case at WVU
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- A second West Virginia University football player has tested positive for the coronavirus, the college said Saturday.
The school's athletic department said the person will self-isolate for 14 days. An investigation identified additional football players who have come into contact with the athlete and those people will also self-quarantine as a safety precaution, the college said.
The school reported the first virus case among its football players on June 15, the first day of voluntary workouts. The athletic department says it is following federal safety guidelines.
When West Virginia begins its fall semester on Aug. 19, students must wear masks on campus, including in class.
Students, faculty and staff must be tested for the virus before they return to campus and complete a coronavirus education course.
Backyard brawl
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The basketball version of the "Backyard Brawl" rivalry between West Virginia and Pittsburgh has been extended through the 2022-23 season.
The colleges separated by 75 miles have played 187 times since first meeting in 1906, with West Virginia holding a 99-88 advantage. The series took a break from 2013-16 because of conference realignment after Pitt left the Big East Conference to join the Atlantic Coast Conference and West Virginia left the Big East to become part of the Big 12 Conference.
Under the terms of the extension, Pitt will travel to face the Mountaineers in the 2021-22 season, with West Virginia visiting the Petersen Events Center in 2022-23.
Kiick on 1972 Dophins
MIAMI (AP) -- Jim Kiick, the versatile running back who helped the Miami Dolphins achieve the NFL's only perfect season in 1972, died Saturday at age 73 following a battle with Alzheimer's disease, daughter Allie said.
