The Newell Community Improvement Coalition sends a THANKS to the volunteers who attended cleanup day in Laurel Hollow Park in Newell. It was by far the most volunteers we have had, and all did a fantastic job.

SPANKS, writes a reader, to the person who mows the grass on the corners of Calcutta-Smith Ferry and Sprucevale roads, but doesn’t also include trimming.

Special THANKS to the LaCroft Elementary PTA for providing a great fun day to all students. It was well-organized and there were many adults to help supervise.

THANKS, writes a reader, to the very nice young woman who paid for my tomato plants Saturday at KMart. It was greatly appreciated.

The Calcutta Lions Club sends a THANKS to the generosity of those who supported our first pasta dinner fundraiser at Adrian’s Restaurant in Calcutta. Proceeds go toward eye care and other community projects. THANKS, too, to Andy and his staff for allowing us to have this fundraiser at his restaurant.

John W. Covert Chapter 47 Disabled American Veterans sends a THANKS to the County Commissioners and the County Engineer for the help in demolishing the building at 619 Broadway in East Liverpool. A job well done.

THANKS, writes a reader, to three good Samaritans – two Rite Aid employees and the Wellsville Police Department – for coming to my aid after a fall at Rite Aid in Wellsville. I was put into an ambulance, but my car was put in my garage, my dog put in my house and my purse retrieved without one thing stolen. There are good people and good police out there. This is Smalltown USA at its best.

SPANKS, writes a reader, to the East Liverpool City School Board for going into executive session before the “Good News” portion of the agenda, thus making the parents and students who were there to speak wait for two hours.

THANKS, writes a reader, to Liverpool Township Trustees for making a much needed change within two of the township’s departments. Finally both can get back on the right path for the betterment of the departments and the township residents.

SPANKS, writes a reader, to those responsible for upkeep at Columbiana County Memorial Park. On Mother’s Day, I went to the cemetery to place flowers on the graves of my mother and sister, but couldn’t see the flowers for the tall grass.

THANKS, writes a reader, to everyone involved in helping make the Beaver Local Elementary Field Days a success again this year. Without the help and support it would not be possible. The students and staff appreciate you all. THANKS, too, to Hope Christian Fellowship for allowing use of its land for the Field Days. The kids had a wonderful time.

THANKS, also, to the employees of Nentwick Care Center who spent the day helping our community.

THANKS, writes a reader, to those who helped the Oak Glen baseball team, in any way, be able play at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. It was an incredible experience.

SPANKS, writes a reader, to the business establishments along Washington Street in Newell that do not maintain the outside appearance of their stores. For months, there has been trash strewn in the grass areas and landscaping rocks surrounding your stores.

SPANKS, writes a reader, to those responsible at Wellsville Prom for not turning up the lights at the grand march so that we could see the beautiful dresses and great tuxedos.

SPANKS, writes a reader, to those people who shake my hand in public when they can clearly see that I am eating. It is both rude and unsanitary.

THANKS, writes a reader, to Hannah Spahr and the Westgate PTA for the delicious Teacher Appreciation Day luncheon and Fiestaware gift. It was a special day.

The East Liverpool-Calcutta Area Garden Club extends a thanks to the Kent-East Liverpool Physical Therapy students for their assistance on April 29 in preparing the Serpentine Garden.
