Alzhemer’s Disease: The most common type of dementia

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published Nov. 2, 2019. Thanks to breakthroughs in medicine and nutrition in recent years, we are living longer than ever before. But this increase in life expectancy also brings an increase in the number of diseases, injuries and impairments that affect older adults. With this in mind, we at the local Visiting Angels office in Salem have created this series of articles to keep our older population and their families informed and to offer some practical advice for meeting the challenges faced by seniors and those who care for ...

A husband left home alone

While my wife spends a week with her sister at a beachside resort in Florida, here I am, a husband left home alone. “Daddy, what will you do all week by yourself?” asked my daughter Shark. “Watch soaps and eat bonbons,” I said, my usual evasive answer. Just between you, me and the fence post, as my mother Ol’ Food would say, I haven’t decided how I’m going to spend my precious unsupervised week. It’s certain that I’ll not be doing what Honey and her sister are doing, which is watching the Hallmark Channel and working jigsaw puzzles for seven days. Neither will ...

State reps respond to override of veto

Gov. Mike DeWine is cautious when it comes to vetoing bills approved by the state Legislature, which is controlled by fellow Republicans. That’s why legislators have rarely voted to override his vetoes during his five years as governor. But when DeWine vetoed legislation on Dec. 29 to ban gender-affirming care for minors and prohibited transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, Ohio House Republicans were quick to react. The House called members back to Columbus for an emergency session Wednesday, just 12 days after DeWine’s veto, to override it in a ...

While sitting at McDonalds I was asked when I was going to have a message that is hell, fire, and brimstone for the newspaper. Unfortunately, through the business of the holidays, I have not submitted an article. I will try to do better in the future. Revelation 21:8 There are many Bible verses that talk about heaven and hell. When we talk about heaven, we talk about the glorious gathering place of the saints of God. John, the Revelator, was fortunate enough to get a glimpse of this third heaven, with all its splendor, gold, jewels, and everything it has to offer. Revelation 21:4 ...

About the timing of Johnson’s resignation

The initial plan for U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson was to resign from Congress in February or early March and start March 15 as Youngstown State University president. But ever since Johnson’s controversial hiring Nov. 21 by the YSU board of trustees, Michael Peterson, the board’s president, has made it clear that he and the board wanted the Republican congressman to lead the university sooner than that. Johnson submitted his resignation letters Tuesday to Gov. Mike DeWine and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, stating he would leave Congress Jan. 21. He starts the next day at ...
