With arrival of summer most people think of taking a vacation and enjoying time with family and loved ones. But at the East Liverpool Area Community and Learning Center it means a higher level of activity for the center and its volunteers. Our volunteers are our "heroes." They step up in their duties to make summer special for others.

Two activities at the center happening only in the summer months provide learning opportunities for children. The instructors are school teachers willing to share their talents with young children during their vacation time.

Throughout the month of July, Amy Dunlap and Katy Muldoon hold music therapy classes in the John Fitzjohn Room at the center. Three sessions are held on each Tuesday and Thursday mornings beginning at 9 a.m. to noon. A small fee is charged for the 10 sessions. Toddlers relax with games and music while parents get a break from having their kids at home all day long every day. This year there are three sessions each Tuesday and Thursday for five weeks. Enrollment is still being accepted from new toddlers. Go to the center's website for further details.

Margaret Meyers has been a middle school art teacher for years and has taught art classes to young school-age children in the center's art room for several years. This year the children's art room is getting air conditioning for the comfort of the parents although much of the time is spent outdoors.

Classes are on Saturday mornings. Four classes were held in June. Margaret is extending her classes into July now. New students are still welcome. Sign up may be done in advance at the reception desk of the center or by calling 330-303-2110.

Many rooms at the center now are air conditioned. The rooms come in all sizes depending upon the need. Rental of rooms are available seven days a week for weddings, receptions, church services, reunions, all types of parties, employment interviewing and testing and events that require more space than can be comfortably handled at home or in an office.

Presently subscriptions for membership in the Legacy & Legends Lecture Series are being accepted. The lecture series now enters its ninth year. For $100 a member and one guest may attend eight Tuesday evening scheduled lectures held in the Farmers Room at the center.

In June, the second of the three elections in 2024 for voting was held for two precincts in the city under direction of the Columbiana County Board of Elections. This is another of the many services to the community provided at the center. Nov. 5 is the final General Elections in Ohio this year.

The center provides space for local service clubs that meet and/or eat, an N.A. Class each Saturday, aerobics classes, weekly Bridge Club, Saturday Movie Matinee in the theatre with no admission charge and the regular monthly meetings of the Guardians of the Children Club.

Massage therapy sessions have been available weekdays by Sharon Palmer. However, for health reasons no massages will be available in July but the massages should resume in August.

Many out-of-town visitors are brought to the center by area residents to enjoy the remarkable Harker Pottery Collection as well as other area potteries of the past. There are also original Hans Hacker art work in his exhibit room. There are art displays at the center not found elsewhere in the community. Visitors often spend several hours observing displays of treasures of the past of our community.

A website for the center is maintained by volunteer Renee Green for the East Liverpool Area Community and Learning Center. The site is updated regularly as new opportunities at the center become available.
