Rotten fruit doesn’t sell
None of us go to a store and look for a rotten black banana. We want a nice, not too ripe, but pleasing to the eye and the stomach banana. Who wants an orange with mold on it, or an apple that looks good on the outside, but is soft and bruised on the inside? Today we learn from God’s word that we are to have fruit of repentance. Matthew 3:8 says, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” What does that mean? It means that we are to live and act like we are Christians. Which by the way means we are to act like Jesus Christ. Matthew 7:15-17 says, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. These are the words of Jesus.” Today too many people say I am a Christian, but they have no fruit of repentance. They still act like heathens. Just going to church on Sunday does not make one saved. You must be born again, which means you leave your old live of sin and start a new life with Christ. Galatians 5:24 says, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.” See to be true fruit producer, you need Jesus in your heart as Savior and the Holy Spirit needs to clean you from your sin nature. It takes more than just going to church and singing a few songs to get to heaven. You have to let Jesus change your life to a fruit producer.
Now what is the fruit that we are to have in our lives? (Galatians 5:22-24) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” One thing I want you to see is fruit not plural. We are to have ALL these attributes in our lives. The only way to have this is to ask God for it. You pray and say, “Jesus not only will you please forgive me of my sins, but will you also clean my heart and plant in it the fruit of the Holy Spirit and remove from me all bad fruit (sin nature)?”
What is bad fruit? Even a child knows that. Bad fruit examples are hate, stealing, swearing, all sexual sin, fighting, discord, drunkenness and more. The bottom line is if you are truly saved you will have fruit of repentance, not fruit of sin. Remember Jesus will help you produce good fruit. If your fruit turns rotten, and it will if you don’t maintain it, ask Jesus to forgive you and plant new fruit.
