SNAP is vital element of social safety net

To the editor: SNAP is a vital element of the social safety net in the United States, significantly contributing to the reduction of poverty and the enhancement of food security for millions of Americans. As such, SNAP not only addresses immediate hunger but also establishes the foundation for enduring positive transformations within society. Our politicians in Washington are lamentably derelict in their responsibility to collaborate and resume their duties. We cannot remain passive while our fellow citizens are deprived of SNAP and other essential benefits. It is imperative that we ...

October is Domestic Violence Month

To the editor: For Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2025 and beyond, we commit to showing up for survivors, always. Each October Domestic Violence Awareness Month rolls around. The month serves as a reminder that domestic violence exists. It reminds us that children and adults are traumatized in their own homes by emotional, financial, verbal, and yes, physical assaults that largely go unnoticed by their neighbors, friends, and families. The theme this year is “With Survivors, Always.” Survivors need, depend on, and deserve safety, our support, and our solidarity. We need to ...

Commends the work of East Liverpool Mayor

To the editor: East Liverpool Mayor Bobby Smith is certainly trying to clean up his city. Recently they condemned and boarded up yet another drug house. I believe, in 2024, he and his administration in conjunction with the Columbiana County Land Bank tore down over 30 structures and this year they are on schedule to tear down at least 32 more! Additionally, since Smith took office, there has been at least 40 drug raids conducted by the Columbiana County Drug Task Force in conjunction with the East Liverpool Police. This in itself is an amazing feat! Although I live in Calcutta, ...

Support Ohio Senate Bill 167

Support Ohio Senate Bill 167 To The editor: When I founded Moving Wellsville Forward, it was about keeping our youth connected to their community. As a former councilman and school board member, I’m watching very closely how Ohio’s legislature is currently considering legislation to protect kids online, and right now there’s two competing approaches to using age verification to give parents more visibility as to what platforms their kids are using online. One, Senate Bill 167, is straightforward, the other, House Bill 302, is going to create a miserable headache for the parents ...

Carbon Capture and Sequestration Hub is risky

To the editor: I’ve lived in the Ohio River Valley for 70 years, in both Jefferson and Harrison Counties. For decades the residents of the Ohio Valley have been paying for the aftermath of extractive industries. That “beautiful clean coal” Trump refers to took lives, and left a legacy of mine shafts and acid mine run-off. Taxpayers continue to foot the bills to plug orphan oil and gas wells, and clean-up un-reclaimed strip mined lands. Recently, the Ohio River Valley was targeted to become a Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) Hub. This CCS Hub will consist of a series of ...
