Local business owner-citizen offers opinion

To the editor: I am not a politician or have an axe to grind. I am a citizen and business owner in this county and state that expects better out of the people in power. Our Columbiana County Republican Chairman, Dave Johnson, has been in power for 30 years in various positions and controls a lot of power at this time. He is our county Republican Party Chairman, Ohio GOP Treasurer, State Central Committeeman, on the Board of Elections, Chairman on the Board of Workers Compensation and there are more. Dave Johnson said of this paper that they are making “crazy accusations” in ...

Here is a different ‘history lesson’

To the editor: I attended the zoning appeals board meeting regarding the exception for the Six Recycling business to relocate to the former Hall China Company complex at the other end of the East End. The area is zoned for industry but the exception was denied. We were given a “history” lesson from the opponents on the evils of the business, being a bad neighbor, the potential for ongoing health problems, the lies and distrust of the owners, and how it would be a detriment to the local neighborhood. The fact that the company has been in operation for over 30 years (longer under ...

Some ideas for improvement

To the editor: I am writing just from my own personal opinion of views about the city in general. Mainly my concern is all the businesses and homes being demolished. Which is a good thing — it’s an issue that should have been dealt with for a long time. This at one time was a cute little pottery town. But the downfall first came with the mills shutting down. It only took a few years for the potteries to follow suit. Then many good businesses also closed or moved on to other bigger cities where they could make a better living. My concern is, what if anything is the city going to ...

Johnson issues response to story

To the editor: The recent sensationalized “news report” detailing cherry-picked bits and pieces of a meritless and flawed lawsuit filed against the Ohio Republican Party and its officers may have left readers with the inaccurate impression that false accusations are factual, and that fake claims and innuendo are somehow truthful realities. This is the kind of garbage that was done to President Trump for four years, and Trump rightly called it “fake news” One might further question the timing of such a “news story” on a suit that was filed back in November of 2021, yet ...

Portman’s willingness to work across the aisle refreshing

Dear Editor With so much political division in Washington, it’s important to spotlight the moments of bipartisanship that we see break through. That’s why it’s relieving to see Senator Rob Portman involved in work with other senators from both sides of the aisle to reform the Electoral Count Act (ECA). The confusion and chaos that followed the 2020 election is in large part due to the fact that, in its current state, the ECA is not completely clear on the role of Congress in presidential elections. The law needs to be clarified to prevent anything like what happened after the ...

Lack of Ukraine awareness by American citizens is shocking

Dear Editor I am writing this in a state of shock as to what was stated to me by AMERICAN CITIZENS. I had two persons who are American citizens come to work on the horses. As we spoke of the events happening in the Ukraine, these two American citizens PRAISED President Putin and Russia for attacking the country of Ukraine. They state that Putin was taking out the mafia and those people doing drug and child trafficking. I asked how about the bombing and killing of women and children. They commented that was from the main stream news and was all FAKE news. That the pictures being shown ...
