Commissioners draining ‘Rainy Day Fund’

To the editor: In 2016, the Hancock County Commission offered a nonprofit that was operating the animal shelter $88,000 from the county’s “general account” to continue to operate the shelter for fiscal year 2017. Combined with the $100,000 annual Animal Shelter Excess Levy, the nonprofit would receive a total of $188,000 in taxpayer funds. The nonprofit agreed. However, the commissioners also mandated changes to the shelter operation contract so detrimental to the welfare of the animals, the nonprofit would not sign the modified contract. To the editor: To the residents of East Palestine, I would like to apologize in advance for any protesters in Grafton who are against the hauling in of hazardous waste from the train wreck. We have a state-of-the-art facility here and have been doing this for a half-a-century. There is always a group of whiners in any situation and we have our share. To the editor: You might imagine how life has been turned upside down for the residents of East Palestine. Having lived in town for 31 years, I can assure you it has. I have been frustrated with just about everything from the railroad company to our federal government. I am writing to brag on the people who have so generously helped. Suggests using solar panels in East Palestine

To the editor: Regardless of what is done to remediate the soil in East Palestine, there will always be a lurking doubt. Earth can heal itself with time. Using solar panels to create income until that time comes seems logical. Solar panels don’t care about soil quality, they are simply looking for sun.
