Support Breast Cancer awareness

2 min read

Dear Editor:

As we all are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Pink Ribbons and decorations are displayed throughout the valley. (Thanks to the efforts of CHANGE Inc.) Mayor Forsythe of Chester, Mayor McNeil of New Cumberland, Mayor Miller of Weirton and the Hancock County Commission have or will proclaim the month as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Wreathes will be placed in city/county offices.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform all residents of the Valley about the “Walk for Women … take a Step against Cancer Awareness” walk on Saturday, Oct. 8. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Hancock County Health Department in New Cumberland (next to the courthouse in New Cumberland). The walk and balloon launch is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The walk is free and everyone is invited. If you raise $10 in donations, you will receive a T-shirt. There will be refreshments and plenty of door prizes to be raffled off after the walk. Why not make it a family event – bring the kids, ride your bike, walk the dog.

Everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer. One in eight women in W.Va. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime; nearly every W.Va. family is affected by the disease. The walk is intended to raise awareness of the need for breast cancer screening, to honor breast cancer survivors and to remember those who have died from the disease. Money raised will remain in West Virginia and may be used by women in Hancock County.

I hope you will join us in this worthwhile endeavor. All donations will be appreciated. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact me at the Health Department.
