Dear Editor:
Much has been written and posted recently regarding the drug epidemic which is present in several of our local areas. This problem was highlighted in a shocking photo showing a couple passed out in a vehicle with a small child in the rear seat.
Reaction to this photo has produced a variety of responses due to the fact that the child’s face is visible and was not blurred in some instances. What the legal or ethical rules state are not my major concern after viewing this photo. These issues are seemingly overshadowed by the safety of this child being present in a vehicle with two unresponsive adults.
Although the picture is both disgusting and sad, it serves to show the innocent victims who suffer behind the scenes. The apparent lack of emotion in the child’s expression is perhaps due to the fact that this situation was one that he had witnessed before.
The two adults’ total disregard for the safety of other drivers, the passengers on the school bus, and mainly for that small child in the car with them, is appalling.
It was, I believe, an act of divine intervention that placed the city’s police officer in the right place at the right time. Through his actions, and the publication of the photo, this child is now safe after being removed from a life that subjected him to this type of behavior.
Hopefully, he is now in a much better environment and being cared for by responsible, caring adults.
So, if this photo was the instrument that showcased this child’s plight, and heightened awareness of the ever-growing drug problem in our area, and the country today, then it has served its purpose.
