Dear Editor:
In April, I was admitted to the UPMC Mercy with bacterial pneumonia and Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome. I was on a ventilator for 10 days. The UPMC staff was wonderful in getting me through successfully. Because I could not walk I was transferred to the Fox Residential, Assisted Living, and Nursing facility in Chester, for occupational and physical therapy. In eight days, the PT staff had me up and walking. Myself, I will heal and get on with it.
The important reason that I write this letter is to convey what I observed while at Fox. Most of the residents in the nursing home facility are long term. For a week I was one of them. We ate, talked, visited, and prayed together. As each day progressed, my appreciation of the staff grew. Daily, I witnessed numerous acts of love, caring, and compassion. Every staff person was attentive to the welfare of the residents.
It takes a person who has empathy and a helpful heart to assist those who need help to get through life. We are blessed to have such a facility in our community.
