Tressel leading the way in motivating Ohio’s children

Ohio is getting ahead of the game in terms of student fitness with a new plan from the lieutenant governor. The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge for students in grades 4-8 is a program developed by Jim Tressel — who has some experience in keeping students fit and healthy. “If we can add just a little better fitness and health, it will make us that much better,” Tressel said last Monday. His idea is a solid one. Rather than outdated and intimidating goals that might throw a young person off track, the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge would let students pick their own activities and ...

Back to the ‘stache

A couple weeks ago I took a cellphone picture of my face and sent it in a text to my friend Bob Milner with the message, “Twins us?” Bob: “OK.” That was a polite response obliquely asking, what is this about? Me: “I shaved off my goatee, looked in the mirror and said, ‘I’m Bob Milner!’” Me again: “I’ll try to look more pleasant as your doppelganger.” I had kind of a sour look on my face in the picture. Bob: “I thought it was Tom Sellick, someone I don’t think I look like at all but you might want to doppelgang with him rather than me.” Me: ...

Angels: Sleep disorders increase as we grow older

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published on Jan. 10, 2020. Thanks to breakthroughs in medicine and nutrition in recent years, we are living longer than ever before. This weekend is for all the workers

Many will be enjoying a long holiday starting today as part of the Labor Day weekend. A real nice four-days off stretch to mark what many folks consider summer’s end. Labor Day once marked the end of traditional summer including back-to-school and the start of fall sports such as high school football. But not so much any longer. Schools have been in session, local swimming pools are closed for the season and school sports are well underway. Autumn is coming soon. With it comes the gorgeous colors of changing leaves, chills in the morning and evening airs, checks of our home heating ...

Rail safety reform falls off the tracks

Those hoping for railroad companies to move on their own toward improved safety for their workers and the communities through which their trains run will have to wait a bit longer. More than two and a half years since a Norfolk Southern derailment in East Palestine, not one of the larger freight railroads in the country has signed on to the Confidential Close Call Reporting System, a voluntary federal program that was meant to reduce rail hazards and prevent accidents. According to a report by the Associated Press, BNSF and Norfolk Southern did attempt partial trials, but have not ...

Former OSU president returning as a consultant

The Ohio State University isn’t letting its former President E. Gordon Gee rest for long, after his departure as president of West Virginia University. They’ve asked him to return to Columbus for a one-year consulting role. According to a report by The Columbus Dispatch, that role will include working with OSU’s new Salmon P. Chase Center to recruit faculty and increase the center’s presence on campus and nationally. Chase was Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of the treasury and later the sixth chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, serving in that role until his death in 1873. ...
