Helen D. Stewart, 92 of Chester, West Virginia passed Tuesday morning Sept. 1, 2026 in the comfort of her home with family at her side. Born Oct. 15, 1933 in Newell, W.Va., she was the last surviving child born to the late George Fern and Mary Jane (Flowers) Hart.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bernard W. Stewart; her son, Lanny Stewart; and her siblings, Gladys (Hart) Calhoun, William Hart and Barbara (Hart) Stewart.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Dan and Scherrie Stewart, Shirley and Larry Berger; four grandchildren, Larry Stewart Berger (Lisa), Deanna Wilhelm (Chris), Tommy Berger (Amanda) and Christie Blaschak (Jerry); six great-grandchildren, Jacob Berger (Jordan), Tyler Berger (Ashley), Katelyn Berger, David Mellinger III (Alexandria), and Danielle Mellinger; five great-great-grandchildren, Kimora Wilhelm, David Mellinger IV, Avella Mellinger, Liam Berger, Westley Berger & CeCe Berger.
Helen was a long time and very active member of the Hookstown Free Methodist Church, helping serve countless funeral luncheons and various other church events with fellow members of the women's fellowship team. She was a homemaker at heart and made her family and her children a priority, but also held a position at Mailing Service (National Church Supply), the Tastee Freeze at Laughlin's corners, and at the original Crickster's Soft-Serve in Chester, W.Va.
Helen's most prized accomplishment was her family. She was a devoted wife, and supported her husband with his roofing business for many years. Together, they enjoyed many activities, including square dancing and events held by the Hookstown Senior Citizens.
Helen spent countless hours showering her family with love, adoration, and prayers. She leaves behind a legacy of determination, faith and perseverance. Her family will miss her dearly, but are left with many fond memories that will be forever cherished.
Family and friends are welcome to call at the McConnell Funeral Home, 447 Pine St., Hookstown, PA 15050 on Friday, Sept. 4, from noon until the time of her service at 2 p.m. Jim McMasters will officiate. She will be laid to rest in the Mill Creek Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, Pa.
