John W. Lewis

1953-2026

John W. Lewis, 72, of Tampa, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on July 11.

A native of Wellsville, John was born on Aug. 31, 1953, the son of Homer and Dorothy Lewis.

He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1971, where he was on the basketball team and ran track.

Sports were the love of John's life, both as a participant and a spectator. He attended Mount Union College and Kent State University, playing basketball at both. In 1976 he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he obtained the rank of Captain and served for 20 years, including in Desert Shield/Storm. During that time he earned business degrees at Campbell College in North Carolina and Golden State University in California. He enjoyed playing baseball at Campbell and basketball and slow pitch softball in military competition, and traveling. After retiring from the Air Force, John worked for the United States Postal Service. He was inducted into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

He was a lifelong member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wellsville.

John is survived by his sister, Janet (Kurt) Reichert, of Hilliard, Ohio; nephews, Jay (Ileah) Reichert of Hilliard and John (Justin Warren) Reichert of Upper Arlington; and cousin, like a brother, Richard (Kay) Gray, of Marysville. He was predeceased by his parents, and niece, Rebecca Reichert.

There will be no calling hours. Private burial will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 401 18th St., Wellsville, OH 43968.
