Harold "Hal" Cox Jr. passed away peacefully on Aug. 13, 2026, in Youngstown, Ohio, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love of the family he cherished most. Born on July 23, 1941, in Chester, Pennsylvania, Hal lived a full and generous life -- one defined above all by his devotion to his wife, his pride in serving his country, and his steady, loving presence as a father and grandfather.
At the heart of Hal's life was his beloved wife of 55 years, Ruth (Collins) Cox. Theirs was a partnership built over a lifetime together, and Ruth was, without question, the great love of Hal's life. Those who knew them could see it in the small things -- the way he looked out for her, the way they moved through life as a team. Her steady companionship was his anchor through every chapter, and being her husband was the role Hal was proudest of.
Hal was equally proud of his years in the United States Navy, where he served as a submariner. Life aboard a submarine demands discipline, trust, and an unshakable bond with the men serving alongside you, and Hal carried those lessons with him for the rest of his life. His time in the Navy shaped who he was -- hardworking, loyal, and quietly courageous -- and he spoke of his service with the kind of pride that never faded. It was a defining chapter that stayed close to his heart for the next six decades.
That same discipline and work ethic carried Hal into civilian life, where he built a respected career as a Nuclear Training Operator at Duquesne Light. He approached his work with the same seriousness and pride he brought to everything, always eager to keep learning and to do the job right.
Outside of work, Hal knew how to enjoy life. He loved the rumble of a classic car engine or motorcycle, and he found real joy in the company of fellow enthusiasts who shared that passion. He also spent many years coaching local baseball and football teams, passing on not just the fundamentals of the game but his own love of hard work, teamwork, and showing up for the people around you. Countless young athletes were better for having known him. Hal was also a proud member of the Masons, where the values of brotherhood and charity he held dear found a natural home.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Cox Sr. and Ruby (Tarry) Cox; his beloved son, Jeff Cox; and grandchildren, Conner and Gavin Cox.
He is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Ruth (Collins) Cox, who was by his side through it all; his son, Kevin Cox; his daughters-in-law, Kimberly and Christina; and his grandchildren, Liam (Riley) and Ethan Cox. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and who will carry his memory -- and his stories of the Navy, the road, and the ballfield -- for the rest of their lives.
Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating Hal's life. Visitation will be held at the Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists in Calcutta, Ohio, on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m., with a service to follow at 7 p.m.
Hal lived a life of love, service, and loyalty -- to his country, to his community, and most of all to his cherished Ruth. He will be deeply missed, and forever remembered with love. May he rest in peace.
