Darryl Glenn Hoppel

CALCUTTA, Ohio -- Darryl G. Hoppel of Calcutta passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, at CrossRoads at Beaver Creek with his family by his side. He was 89 years old.

Born in East Liverpool, he was the son of the late Everett and Leanore Hoppel. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School and a two-time state wrestling champion. He was always active, working on the farm, training horses, and racing at Mountaineer. He spent many years involved in the horse racing community.

He was known for his great personality, quick wit, and many memorable sayings. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends. His home was often the gathering place for family occasions and get-togethers. His grandchildren lovingly called him "Papa."

His accomplishments in wrestling were recognized throughout the years. He was inducted into the East Liverpool High School Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Lou Holtz Family Hall of Fame. In 2007, he received the Ohio State Athletic Association Family Heritage Award for wrestling. He is also scheduled to be inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Hoppel.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jerry Ann Hoppel, his children: Karla Holden (Mike), Korrine Evelsizer (Rick), Kristine Fisher (Jerry), Glenn Hoppel, Robb Prescott, Stacie Roth (Jesse), and Shawn Six (Diane); grandchildren, Kandice, Katie, Kimberly, Jerry Le, Kennedy, Kendra, Drew, Taylor, Sydnie, and Rilee, Hamilton, Payton, and Grayson; and 15 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brothers, Herman Hoppel, James Hoppel, and David Hoppel.

Rev. Norm Eckert with conduct a funeral service at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, at the Dawson Funeral Home. Friends may visit prior from 1 to 5 p.m. Burial will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Following the service family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for Fellowship.
